Just had a thought does anyone know if you can take contact lens solution on the plane. I usually have to take my lenses out for a couple of hours because my eyes always dry out on the plane and put them in the case with a drop of solution.

Nope not allowed on! My friend had to take her lenses out and throw away the solution!

Looks like i'm going to be wearing my glasses on the trip.

What you can't do is take bottles/containers of solutions. What you can do is take:
- Disposable contact lenses in sealed
packaging, sufficient for flight (ie one or
two pairs)
- Non-disposable contact lenses in carrier
with small amount of solution (but not
bottles of solution)

What I would do (and will do when I travel) is to take a print out of the latest leaflet from the BAA website. I will wear my contact lenses to security. If they have a problem with me having the container with liquid in (and no contact lenses), I will take my lenses out there and then and put them in their container... then no problem.

Me too... I would scare the locals in mine... ;) (some people just DON'T have faces that suit glasses... :sad2: ).

When do you fly? I don't fly longhaul (just a quick flight to Belfast) until early October... would be good to swap experiences...

If anyone else has experiences, please post :)

Will do :thumbsup2

I posted this on the US board and they said that you can now take a small 4 oz bottle of saline on the plane. I wonder how they are about the eye drops in the individual capsules?

I can't wear glasses, I'd have a headache for two days!!

Maybe within the US or US-UK, but wouldn't bet on it UK-US... if you look at my link to the BAA page stating items allowed and not allowed on the plane...

You wear contact lenses ALL the time? Am not conviced that is healthy... since - no matter how good the contact lenses - they still restrict the oxygen flow to the eye. You may be ok short term, but longer term... :(

If your glasses give you a headache, time to get new glasses (with a better perscription).

We flew home with Virgin (Miami - Heathrow) last week and were allowed to take contact lens solution on the plane as long as the bottle size was less than 60ml. Try asking at your optician as they will probably give you a small sample size bottle - our did. You'd need to check the situation for flights out of the UK though.
I was also allowed to take my bottle of Bach's Rescue Remedy - thank goodness!
How about just filling your lens case before the flight, and then asking at check-in if you can take that on? (We also did that - in case bottles of solution weren't allowed).

Thats what i usually do but i have phoned the airport (birmingham) and they have said as long as the box and bottle have not been tampered with is should be ok. I have also asked my optician if he could put a label on the box with his practice and my name on to prove it is a form of medication, when you think about it thats what it is.

I think UK-US will be stricter than from Europe. I'm just confused on how they do it within the US.

Boo - I've had my contacts for 20 years now - gas permeable ones - and put them in in the morning and out at night.. no problems yet (touch wood)

You can't - they will allow a dry case only - no solution at all.

Come on guys, even I have an attention span that can handle 10/11 posts on the same thread...

These are the official regulations published by the BAA (i.e. the people responsible for airport security).

As I said (and DeeDee has latched on to), take a print out of that (or the latest regulations if they are updated) with you to the airport. If you are questioned, pop your contact lenses out and into the case with solution in (if you are really worried, do it BEFORE the security checks). If the security people are STILL resistant, show them your BAA print out and then ask to speak to a supervisor...

We flew out of Gatwick on 11th August with BA returning on 1st September and even on our flight over they allowed a small amount of contact lense fluid in the storage pot to enable you to take them out on the flight. I asked this specifically as I wear contact lenses and had got rid of all my solution in the case to go out but was assured I could have carried that. Hope this helps.

I must admit that I had six pairs of blister-sealed daily lenses in my hand luggage on the way back from New York a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't aware that the rule was to only have a number "sufficient for the flight" - but it certainly wasn't enforced in my case (unless these rules only apply to flights from UK-USA?).

I think that they are being a LOT stricter ex-UK... The BAA rules only apply ex-UK, other countries apply other rules (some countries still only allow you to depart them with a small plastic bag!)

I have the type of lenses that are left in constantly for one month, don't even take them out at night, my regular check ups state my eyes are healthier than most non-contact lens wearers! I must admit I couldn't cope with faffing around taking them out/putting them in on a longhaul flight.
