Before the recent quart bag changes I remember reading on the TSA site that contact solution 4oz or smaller was allowed. Now I am reading everywhere about the plastic bag and 3oz. I searched high and low and found a 4oz bottle of my solution and am now paranoid it might be taken. Does anyone know if the 4oz contact solution supercedes the 3oz plastic bag rule?

I think the 3 oz is the one in force. You can go to WalMart's (or other vision centers )vision center and ask for trial bottles of wetting solution. The bottles are tiny, less than an ounce and that should hold you on the plane.

You SHOULD be able to take the 4 oz. contact solution with you on the plane as currently specified on the TSA website list of Permitted and Prohibited Items. Contact solution falls into the medicinal exception category exempting it from the 3 oz limitation, and would need to be "declared" at the screening checkpoint for potential additional screening. So this SHOULD be no problem. That said, there have been lots of reports on Flyertalk of TSA frankly not following their written rules on this (which IMO don't seem to have much room for additional interpretation) and many have reported being forced to toss their 4 oz. contact solution because it's over the new 3 oz limit, when in fact it should be exempt from that limit. Grrrrr... So right now it's not clear whether you'll be able to get a 4 oz. bottle of contact solution thru security even tho you should be able to. I suspect in a few more weeks there will be enough complaints thru TSA channels that this will be consistently enforced correctly with respect to their written guidelines but if you're traveling soon :confused3 .
Good luck!

You know, things have gone from confusing to darn right stupid. I went to the link you posted and read what they said.
This quote is from the allowed/not allowed list.

Eye drops - You are allowed to carry up to 3 oz., of eye drops in a clear, one-quart plastic bag. Volumes greater than 3 oz. must be declared to the Security Officer and cannot be carried in your clear, one-quart bag.

Now, do they consider contact lense solutions/wetting drops and eye drop?
If not, then you are back to the 3 oz. limit.
If it were me, I put on my glasses and pack the darn stuff.

This is totally nuts.

It is getting so you will need to print the dang rules and carry them to the airport to show the TSA.

Scroll on down the link I provided to the table "Make up and Personal Items" and it states VERY CLEARLY AND SPECIFICALLY "Saline solution - You are allowed to carry up to 3 oz., of eye drops in a clear, one-quart plastic bag. Volumes greater than 3 oz. must be declared to the Security Officer and cannot be carried in your clear, one-quart bag." This is a direct quote from the TSA website. So I have absolutely no idea how you could be told that your 4 oz. of contact solution ISN'T ALLOWED IN YOUR CARRY ON - assuming you've properly declared it to the screener.
Sorry I'm usually in the rule follower society but the TSA stuff is nuts and I have no illusions that this is making flying safer (sorry, off soap box now).

Many of the road warriors on Flyertalk do print the rules and take them along - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't :confused3 . The reported inconsistencies between screeners and locations are really mind boggling, and it's hard to feel that the TSA screening is more than marginally effective at this time.

Not sure who you are responding to. But, I do totally agree with you.

Pluto Pony - please stay on your soap box! There is strength in numbers.

The TSA world is going nuts - and the "rules are rules" folks are only playing into it. I recall Col. Potter opining about "horses 'patooties,'" disneyldwjr, do you have a picture of "the other end" that I can use when ranting about TSA?

That the people we entrust with our security somehow see a differance between 3 oz of solution in a plastic bag and 4 oz of the very same solution is beyond belief. The later can not be in a plastic bag! Give me a break! Where is the sanity? And all over a plot that never was a practical reality!

Yes, I do have a picture of the other end. Different horse, but, definitely the rear end. :)

Not aimed at you :sunny: , or anyone specifically for that matter. Guess I've been reading FT too much as I've caught myself using the term "sheeple" more and more ;) .

Thanks for the responses. I have decided to leave my 4oz bottle in my checked bag and just hope it doesn't get lost in the luggage shuffle. Unfortunately, my glasses are not the proper prescription (noone's fault but my own) and my eyes are extremely sensitive to solution. I have to be very particular. I was soo happy when I found the kind I need in a 4oz bottle, so much for that. I wasn't really concerned about needing anything on the plane just randomly nervous about my checked bags not making it to the right place at the right time. The last time we went to Florida I stayed at a time share and airline had our bags sent to us the next morning when they finally arrived. It wasn't a big deal because I always carry every single toiletry in my carry on in fact my carry on is a toiletry bag from LL Bean for this exact purpose.

Thanks again, not going to stress about it. Just might be sleeping with my contact in :confused3 if something goes astray.

You might be able to fill your contact carriers with the solution and cap them and put them in your purse. That way if they give you trouble, you can take them out and put them in the case and put your improper glasses - :) on.
