Freeze that credit…..
Strongly agreed here. I've had my identifying information widely available for quite a while now, with several fraudulent attempts to use it right around the lockdown. I froze my credit reports shortly after that, and have had no issues since. It is very easy to do, and also very easy to lift the freeze for as short as a day when one has to apply for credit for any reason.

Obvious safety reasons aside to freeze your credit, it's also very handy in negotiations.

I've used "I need to 'go home' and unfreeze my credit" to get away from pushy salesmen after "No" hasn't worked. And they really can't see anything on you when it's frozen, so they begrudgingly agree.

Or "Can you tell me which agency you'll run so I can unfreeze the right one" is interestingly eye opening if the person about to run your credit has no idea what that question means. Gives you a second chance to decide if what you're buying is worth it. It's easy to unfreeze on your phone, but you can use excuse #1 above if their response gives you a bad feeling.

Does that mean to “lock” your card or system wide freeze on your credit?
System wide freeze. I've had to do it myself unfortunately. The 3 main credit reporting bureaus allow you to do it. Equifax, Transunion and Experian. I usually "thaw" the freeze for like a week or so when I actually need it to be unfreezed like applying for a card or something and then it goes back to being frozen again afterwards.

Not sure if they still do it but most or all the bureaus also have a "for pay" lock and credit monitoring plan, that's not same thing as a freeze (which is free). Make sure you don't accidentally choose the paid plan. I noticed they like to try and trick you.
Agree about freezing, regardless. We always keep ours frozen unless we need it for something.
Is there a single place to do this, or do you contact each one individually?

You go to individual credit bureau. Some you have to create an account. All are easy to unthaw when needed. Transunion is the hardest for me for some reason but it still isnt too bad and much less hassle than dealing with someone getting credit your name.

None of the credit bureaus did I have a problem with, with chex systems that was the one that was the biggest PITA because I had to wait for a pin to be mailed to me
