I am a DVC member since 2011, 180 points at BLT. We have a trip planned for November already but are now considering a trip this summer. We know we will add on, but there isn't much available right now (sept use year) & I don't think we have enough time for a summer trip. So, I'm considering renting some points for the summer trip, about 150. I'd prefer renting from someone who wanted/was willing to do a transfer because than I can have more control of the reservation (correct?). I've read lots about renting, but the information seems pretty scattered over multiple threads. What is the best/safest way to pay? I'd really like to go in June, hoping for a few nights at least at AKV. Are members who rent ever willing to book split stays? There seems to be more AKV availability in July....we went in July last year & the weather was great but i think June would be even better. I like Saratoga & wouldn't mind rating there, but since this is a celebratory trip I want to do something a little more special.

Like I said, we know we are going to at on, & will have the money to do so on April 19, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of inventory. & I don't know if we'd be able to do a summer trip if we added on. How long do they usually take? One month? Three months? I know RFOR is something like 30 days.

Thanks for any tips! I just don't want to make a stupid mistake!

Let's start with the easiest answer first. If you wanted to add on via resale, it typically would take 2-3 months from the time you signed your contract until the time your points are loaded into your account.

Disney has been oddly active in ROFRing contracts the past few weeks. So, depending where you want to add on, it might take a couple of tries to get a contract through.

As for renting or transferring. I prefer transferring because it allows you to make your own reservations vs. the other owner making the reservation (which is what happens when you rent).

If you go the rental route, you retain no control over the reservation (even though you're a member).

If you go the transfer route, PayPal usually works best (but money is not technically supposed to change hands, so when you call MS to make the transfer, you shouldn't mention the $$$). The only real downside to figuring out a transfer is trust. One of you is going to have to trust the other and do their part of the transfer first, eith you sending the money or the other owner sending the points.

Hope your summer trip works out!

Thank you! I was thinking a transfer would be best due to being able to make a reservation myself. I didn't know that about the money though so I will make sure not to mention it. Is Paypal the only payment option? I have nothing against PayPal, but what are the benefits that make it the best route?

The method pf payment is negotiable between those involved. Some will also accept personal checks and then make the transfer after the check has cleared (which could take an additional 2 weeks).

The transferring member will need to know your name, address and membership number to complete the transfer unless they can do a 3-way call with MS.

Good luck!
