Considering a DSLR: where to start with lenses?

The expense of a DSLR will be bad enough, I can't afford to sink a lot of money into additional lenses right off.

Will I be ok with just the camera at first? Can I do ok without the extra lenses right off?

Well...you will, of course, need at least ONE lens. Which lens that is depends on your needs and budget. Could you give some feedback on both parameters, and which DSLRs you are considering.

Are you going Canon or Nikon? Or something else?

I shoot Nikon D700. The first "extra lens" I bought was the 50mm 1.8 - it's very affordable and it's an amazing lens. It gave me the ability to get those great blurred background of "bokeh" shots.

Of course, you could get a camera with the lens kit it comes with, usually an 18-55 for close up shots. Then, you could build your lens with a zoom, the nifty 50, and any others you might want to get after you cut your dslr teeth. But, there are some good two-lens deals out there right now that get you a tele-zoom and a regular lens.

like they said, you will need at least one lens! The good news is the kit lens supplied on a lot of Canon models is very good (18-55IS)
