So my 2 princesses and myself are going to WDW in January w/o dad. We are flying out of Buffalo, but DH does not trust my driving, so he wants to drop us off and pick us up. I think he's also looking to sneak in some shopping for himself, LOL!! Anyway, since he will be with us while we are crossing the border, we are fine. But will we be asked for a consent letter in the US airports??

I've only ever been asked for a letter once and that was coming back into Canada but I'd say better safe then sorry. It's just one piece of paper to fold up with your travel documents.

I was asked both ways last year, but that was when I went from YYZ.

Good point, I'll just get one. Might have to spring for the notorized one after all.

I think you will not need letters. Once you are in the US, flying to other parts of the US, this is not a problem.

The letter is to cross the border ....it has nothing to do with flying in the USA. Since your DH will be with you and the kids to cross into the US and to cross back into Canada you will not need a letter of any kind.

If it makes you feel more comfortable you can have your DH print a letter for you to carry but I certainly would not go to the expense of getting it notarized.

I thought I would not need it but I also thought I better check on here. You guys are great...thanks for replying.

Now if January would only hurry up and get here:cool1:

I will say that my dd was traveling from TO to the states for her uncles Wedding. They had a layover in a city in the states, boarding the plane here, her dad was asked for the letter. They do have different lasts names, but she was 13 at the time, he did have a notarized letter, which I had gotten him, I did have it dated so he could use it several times over a period of 2 years, though it only ever was used once.

i would have it just incase. we flew from hali in may w/o dh. we forgot until last minute and he scribbled it off before heading bk to the field for the weekend. leaving wasn't an issue. however returning through customs here was a pain in the tucas! she grilled me like you wouldn't believe and belittled me saying well i could go out and find him but this doesn't cut it. um great, yes we left canada with it, but now coming home you're giving me a hard time? it doesn't help that i'm hypehnated and the kids aren't. lesson learned, be prepared for everything from now on.

Will your DH be driving you and picking you up. If so you will not need the letter. Like mentioned before it is only when crossing the border that you need the letter (leaving and returning). Last summer Dh drove us (and picked us up) to the airport in Buffalo and I was a little nervous that they would ask me for a letter when going through security so I had Dh wait outside until we went thorough (texted him to say he could go).

Yes he will. He does not trust my driving especially in the US of A, LOL!!! He too did say he'll hang around until we go in so that would work. Thanks for responding.

I have travelled numerous times alone with my son and the only time I get asked for documentation is coming back into Canada at Customs. They don't seem to care on the US side. One time, I automatically gave the letter with our passports and the US Customs guy said to me "Why do I want this?" like I was an idiot for giving it to him.:rotfl:

I even questioned the Customs officer when they asked for it upon our return why I don't ever get asked on the US side and he said that Canada just wants to make sure that the kids travelling into Canada belong in Canada which I thought the Canadian passport was for!:confused3

In 8 trips out of Canada, I have only had to show a letter 3 times all coming back into Canada - never anything leaving. Typically how the Customs handles it is they ask either myself or my son "Where's Dad?" so I say, "I have Sole Custody, would you like to see it?" and they always say "Yes" and read it. It is never a big deal though - I still process through quickly.

I have actually been asked for the letter by the TSA agents at the Buffalo Airport, he did not ask to see the letter just asked that I had one. I had one so it was not a problem but not sure if they would have done anything if I did not have it.

Like others have said I have never been asked for it going into the US alone (at least 10 trips without my husband) but I have been asked for it twice returning into Canada and both a Pearson.

I am glad I read this post - I willl have to add getting a consent letter from DH to my to do list.

I have also done a few trips without Dh and have been asked by US customs when crossing the border a few times and only once returning so it is best to be prepared.

I have never been asked for a letter. I cross the border with my girls at a minimum 4 times a year and have never been asked. I have crossed in NB, PQ and ON. :confused3 Strange to me that it's not the same policy every where, every time.

I guess it depends on the border guard. We shop a lot in Buffalo (every couple months) and have been asked strange questions at the border and other times been just waved through. In regards to the travel letter, I think the reason I've been asked to provide it when I have travelled without my DH is because my children don't look like me (my DH is black, I'm white and our dd's look more like him) so I guess they want to make sure they are actually mine.;)

The past two years my sister was with my niece and I when we crossed the boarder to go to WDW. They never asked for a consent letter coming or going.

I did have a consent letter that I got from the Dis and my sister and BIL filled it out but it wasn't noterized.

I have had them ask if I was flying from Canada to the US and if I was coming back into Canada without one of my niece's parents.

does anyone know at what age that you do not need one ? my husband's younger brother is coming with us to disney world in december ... we are flying out of boston ... he will be 16 at the time ... but has a different last name then all of us....
