connecting in New York- into LGA and out of JFK

Looking at booking flights in the future MSP to London....... one of the options is to connect in New York, but to do so, we would land and LaGuardia and fly out of JFK.....

How does this work? Does American or the airport offer a shuttle service for connectiong passengers or would that be something we would have to take care of on our own?

How does luggage work? Would American move our luggage from LGA to JFK or would we have to claim our bags and re-check them?

This would be booked as 1 itinerary that is being offered by AA on their site, so it must be a common connection....

No, no shuttle no help from AA at all !

I booked this by mistake once not paying close attention to the connection. Although we were Boston to La G and then JFK to Orlando.

We flew into La G collected our bags, grabbed a cab to JFK and started all over again. We made it but it was stressful to say the least! To top it off I was traveling as the solo adult with my then 4 and 6yo dd's.

I would not do this. Just a few weeks ago I was forced to rebook myself into LGA and out of JFK for an international trip after an IRROP. I would certainly not do it again unless there was absolutely no other option.

You will have to claim your luggage in LGA, pay to take a taxi or bus to JFK, and re-check in. The traffic on this route can be bad.

I agree with the above poster. Do whatever you can to find a different flight. Transferring between these two airports will be a huge hassle which you don't need. There are many other options.

I am not going anytime soon, so I have plenty of time to decide...... I was just curious...

AA does go through BOS and ORD to get to London as well, but the availability of awards tickets on those routes is pretty slim....... plus the BOS flights are on an aircraft with 3x3 seating.. yuck.... I want to make sure it is on an aircraft with 2x seating like a 777, so I will keep an eye on things.....

Again, not in a hurry, but looking ahead a few years when the kids are out of school and I can take DW to London....

they r close to each other but not for a connecting flight, you would have to take a car service or cab

Not when searching online. You need to get a phone agent to do the search.

AAdvantage miles are very easy to redeem in general, far more generous than the other programs.

Further, AA allows you to book one-way with miles and pay the return. This is a better use of miles - take one way in business class (which is the same as round-trip in coach) and pay the coach fare on the return, which depending on season will be anywhere from $300-$650. In this case it's better to take the business class segment from Chicago, or even go further down to Dallas or Miami, since these flights are longer than the relatively short hops from Boston and New York, so more time to sleep and slightly elevated and less rushed meal service.

Keep in mind using AA miles on BA flights requires you to pay BA's insane fuel surcharges.

I would avoid LGA at all costs but especially if I had to go from there to JFK.

I thinkbut dont know for sure that the distance from LGA to JFK is about the same as from one end of the AA terminal in DFW to the other.

Sooooooo agree with the part I bolded. There's a reason I call it LaGhetto. I'd rather travel to Newark (either pay for NJ Transit and AirTrain or go to meet SuperShuttle at a Manhattan hotel (seriously it's like $15ish from a hotel but over $65 from my apartment??? ditto for a friend who lives TWO BLOCKS from a hotel in Manhattan...insanity!!) and ride from there) and fly out of EWR if I can't find something out of JFK.
