My DD Lauren has passed her 11+ and has been accepted into Grammar school.

We are so pleased as she got 91% in her maths exam too.

Great news for all of us :)

Sorry to be such an idiot, but what is "Grammar School?"

Oh yes, and Congratulations to Lauren! :bounce:

Grammar school is a high level all girls or all boys school. It offers education to those top 20% that can keep up with the pace of learning.

It means a lot more homework, but it will all be worth it.

Congratulations Lauren :)

I never regretted my Grammar School education.....it was ALL worth it ;)

What a great Crimbo present for you guys :)

Thanks SMAX. More Questions. What are the ages/grades/levels at a Grammar School? Is it state run? It sounds a little like our "magnet" high schools schools, which are state run high schools that children have to test for a slot.

Yay! That's great - Congratulations Lauren :) :) :)

Olaf

Yes they are state run, and it does sound similar as they need to pass a three exam test to be offered a place.

They start when they are 11 and can leave at 16 or go on until they are 18.

They are taught at a much higher and faster level than main stream schools.

Many parts of the UK have stopped the Grammar schools but we are lucky down here near London as they are still in high demand and are very over subscribed. Many apply and few are chosen.

Regards
Simon

They sound terrific! So why are they stopping them? Funds? Makes no sense.

I'm just full of questions.

It's a great political 'hot potato' - the government like's for us all to be 'equal' and anything that can be described as a 'two tier' system is heavily criticized.

The grammer schools are/were accused of providing the good students with a great education at the expense of those other students who didn't get in, and ended up at a mediocre high school. Around here we haven't had grammer schools for 30+ years, but my mum still carries with her a great stigma because she failed her 11plus and went to an ordinary school.

I'm not sure I agree with the 11plus exam system, it seems a little unfair to judge a child's whole future on 1 set of exams, but on the other hand, trying to take a "one school fit's all" approach, doesn't seem to do anyone any favors either, so I am not really sure what the correct approach is.
