Last week's question:

This topsy turvy Disney classic set in 1947 Los Angeles, inspired both an in-Park attraction and a land. Name the film and its cartoon star.
Answer: Who Framed Roger Rabbit starred who else, Roger Rabbit.

Roger Rabbit finds himself in another jam.

Winner of 4 Academy Awards including Best Visual Effects, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a landmark film in many respects. In fact, the film marks the first time that characters from different animation studios (including Disney) share the same screen.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit stars Bob Hoskins, who plays P.I. Eddie Valiant. Valiant is a detective hired to help clear Roger Rabbit's name after the Toon is accused of a serious crime. The film placed "Toons" in the real world, side by side with everyday people. This was all done without the use of computers or digital animation.

To get the effect, actors performed by themselves (or with props that took the place of animated characters). Animators would then go back and add Roger Rabbit or other "Toons" to the scene after shooting. During some takes, actor Charles Fleischer (who provided the voice for Roger Rabbit) wore a bunny suit and "stood in" for Roger to help actor Bob Hoskins perform his lines.

The film was so popular it inspired a new land and attraction at Disneyland – Mickey's ToonTown and Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin opened at Disneyland in 1993. A ToonTown was added to Tokyo Disneyland in 1996. ToonTown Online was opened in 2003.

Did you know: Long before Who Framed Roger Rabbit Walt Disney mixed live action with animation in films like Mary Poppins. Walt started experimenting with the technique by producing the Alice Comedies in the 1920's. These series of animated cartoons placed a live action girl named Alice in an animated world. These shorts are available on the Walt Disney Treasures sets.
