So, if I have points and borrow from the next year (2022) to be able to get my reservation, (yes, I walk Christmas, sorry), can I Bank the remainder of these points back into 2022?

Next year, when I need all 150 points again for my next reservation, and I need to borrow 38 for this to happen, what determines the number of remaining points that I can bank? I will end up with extra because of the walking.

I know that I knew this answer at one point, but I have since forgotten/confused myself. Thank you so much!

Banking and borrowing are final transactions, so if you borrow any 2022 points into your 2021 UY, they're stuck there and cannot be returned to the 2022 UY. They'll expire at the end of your 2021 UY. However, you'll be allowed to borrow only the number you need to complete a reservation - you can't borrow points in advance. That's one of the problems with walking, if you have to walk across UYs - although I may be misunderstanding your plan. What is your UY month? Knowing that might help us help you better. (If your UY is December, and you're wanting to walk a Christmas reservation, you really can't start your walk by reserving November dates. Any points used to book November 2022 have to be used that month - they won't be available to use for any December 2022 dates.)

Okay, this might be a simpler question that I was able to narrow down: I am getting 21 points for my December 2021 UY. The total contract is 150 points. I borrowed 36 points from 2022 to walk my reservation. At one point I had 186 points in my 2021 bucket.

I am assuming that these 21 points I will not be able to bank into 2022. Does this seem correct? It's confusing for me to look at incoming points and not know whether or not I will be able to bank them!

This also means that I will only have 114 points in my 2022 uy. So I will have to borrow again from the following year... Which means in about 2 years I won't have enough points to actually take this vacation, I believe, and I don't think that's even factoring in the 50% borrowing penalty right now. I think this is right, does it seem like it to you?

Thank you so much for helping me sort through this ☺

If you modify and have points left over, the current-year points will be returned while borrowed points will be used first for the reservation. Therefore, you will be able to bank the points that are returned.

Having a December UY means your points are "good" from December 1 through November 30 each year. If you are already walking a reservation for Christmas 2022, that means you've already booked a reservation that currently covers dates in September 2022, is that right? I'm sorry to tell you that the 36 points you say you borrowed to make that reservation can be used to walk forward, but only up to the night of November 30, 2022, because they're now stuck in your 2021 UY that runs from Dec. 1, 2021 through Nov. 30, 2022. You will not be able to use those 36 borrowed points for any reservation in December 2022.

The 21 points that are coming for (left in?) your 2021 UY can be banked into your Dec. 2022 UY, but if they were used to book a reservation, you'll have to cancel it in order to free them up for banking. What other points did you use for the reservation? How many points did it take to make the reservation you already have?

If I'm understanding your situation correctly (a big IF), I would recommend that you stop walking now, cancel the reservation you've already made (unless you can use it and can spare the points) and not start again until January 1, 2022, when you can reserve December 1, 2022 plus the length of your desired reservation, and then walk forward. For that reservation, you could use any Dec. 2021 points that you bank into 2022 (you can bank them anytime up to July 31, 2022, so you have plenty of time), any remaining Dec. 2022 points (sounds like that would be 114 points), and then you could borrow from Dec. 2023 however many points you need to complete the reservation.

Walking across UYs is very difficult and not recommended, because if you have to borrow, you can end up with points stuck in the wrong UY.

Thank you both-- walking is really wrecking my calculations. Ugh!

I think I'm going to take a riff off of what you said Carolyn-- I'm going to keep this reservation, and I can make one more year after that, and then I think I'm going to bank all of the remaining points and just pay for that Christmas. That might give me enough of a buffer to not be in this constant borrowing situation.

I am confused. Are the 21 points banked 2020 UY points? If so, those expire November 30th.

If you borrowed into 2021 UY to walk, with the intention to get to Xmas 2022, those points are no longer valid for that trip.

You do not want to borrow points for trip in the next UY when walking.

Well, I'll tell you that we started off our first year of ownership by borrowing most of the next UY's points and have stayed pretty much in borrowing mode most of the time. However, I have a simple spreadsheet to keep track of our points because trying to remember whether I'm borrowing or banking or how many points I have left is way beyond me. But I think the real issue for you will be that it's very difficult to walk across a UY, especially if you have to borrow, so if you want to walk a Christmas reservation and have a December UY, you probably shouldn't start your walk until Jan. 1 of a year, when you can book Dec. 1 of that year with the right UY points.

I'm booking 6 days at the end of december, not at the beginning, so I don't believe I'm walking across my UY.

The 21 points were left over from my 2021 reservation coming up, they are in my December 2021 UY, so they shouldn't expire until next November.

My question is that I borrowed 36 points in total to book this year's Christmas, and have those 21 points left for the coming year. Will I be able to bank these 21 points?

Basically, will the points that I borrowed already have been used in the reservation, and will these 21 points be bankable, and be usable for my 2022 Christmas reservation, or will I need to use these up during the 2021 uy ending November 30th 2022?

If these points are indeed 2021 UY points, then you can bank them once you get to the start of the 2021 UY and they will be there for a 2022 Uy trip.

If you are walking the trip, as long as you start the walk Dec 1st and beyond, then yes, you won’t be walking across a UY. It sounded like you start earlier than that.

But if you were allowed to borrow, I am confused as to how you ended up with points still available? Or did that happen once you finished getting what you wantex, after you had borrowed while walking?

Exactly, the 21 points were extra that I ended up with after walking. In total I needed 186 points to walk my reservation, and the reservation itself ended up being 165 points in total. The 21 points are left over from this walking. I just wasn't sure if they would retain their unbankable status, or if the borrowed points would already have been used up in the actual reservation, leaving these free to be banked into my 2022 uy.

If you were walking why did you need more points than the final reservation ended up being?

OOOHHHHH, you already walked for this Christmas, Dec. 2021? I thought you were walking for Dec. 2022. Sorry if I confused you, then - I didn't understand what your current situation actually was. As Sandi said, yes, if those 21 points are Dec. 2021 points, you can bank them into 2022.

The issue of walking across UYs came up because I thought you were in the process of walking now for a Dec. 2022 reservation and had booked dates in Sept. 2022 (your 2021 UY) that you planned to walk through Oct. and Nov. and then across into Dec., your 2022 UY. In that case, the points you borrowed from 2022 into 2021 would not be able to cross into the 2022 UY because they would be stuck in 2021 UY. Sorry if that confuses you even more!

I'm curious about this too! Why did you need to borrow points from 2022 into 2021 and end up with extra 2021 points? You said at one point you had 186 points in 2021 but only needed 165 for the reservation you wanted.

In order to fully walk the reservation a week in advance of each date, I needed 186 points-- mainly because I went from the end of December to the beginning of January in the process of walking, and December is almost twice the points of January, so I needed more to get the week ahead of my reservation in December then I actually ended up needing with part of my reservation in the beginning of January. :)

For the future, you do not need to do that. Instead of walking a full 7 days, just walk as many as you need to not borrow. As long as you have at least 2 nights, a walk is just as successful. Just requires moving more often.

So, if you booked 6 nights, you simply keep walking that until you get to the actual dates and then book the 7!

As @Sandisw mentioned, you can just reduce the number of nights that you have at a given time to keep within your current points. I did this walking a Value 2BR into January. I had to go through Christmas and New Years and had just enough points for my 7 nights in Jan. Some times I only had 4 nights booked because the points were higher during those times but that way I avoided having to borrow points.
