Confused About Points Calculated

Is this right? When I used the points calculator to compute the number of points need for a one week stay next May, it came back with 240 at Coronado Springs (std view) and 136 at BWV (studio). Is it because Coronado Springs isn't a VC property?

Sounds right for 8 nights. Non DVC properties are very expensive points wise. Unless it's a special occasion, it makes more sense to use the DVC properties. Especially with the discounts Disney has been offering for non-DVC properties (30% - 40% off range).

Also remember if you book a non-DVC property and decide to cancel, those points are "reservation points" and can only be used for a non-DVC property because they were traded out and they cannot be banked. For example, if you reserve CSR and then change your mind, you can't use them for BWV.

For one week in May, 2003, CS would be 172 points. Waterview and Standard views require the same number of points at the moderates. This is according to the 2003 point schedule for the Disney Collection that is posted on the DVC Members' web site.

A studio at BWV for the same time period costs 107 (standard view) and 123 (preferred view).

If you are not a DVC member and are looking to rent points, you should know that it is almost never to your advantage to rent points to stay at a non-DVC resort. It is almost always more economical to rent directly from Disney, especially if you can get a discounted rate.

For example, May, 2003 rack rates at CS are $144 (standard view) or $159 (waterview or king). You need to add the 11% tax to the cash rate, but not the DVC rate. A week in May, 2003 in a waterview at rack rate (including tax) would be $1236. DVC points rent for $10/point on the average, so you would pay $1720 for that same room if you rented points from a DVC member at the average rate. Unless you were able to find someone to rent you points for $7 or less per point (usually only points about to expire rent for this little), you would end up paying much more to reserve the room with points. And that doesn't even take into account that you could likely get a good discount at CS for this time of the year, making that room even less than $1236!

HTH.

Thanks very much to both of you! I'm looking into this for the first time, so it's all new to me...

Don't you worry, it can be confusng even to those of us that are members. Don't hesitate to ask any questions you have. Well, maybe not any, don't ask if you can put 10 people in a 2 bedroom. That kind of question really draws lines in the sand, if you know what I mean.
