Can renters confirm the reservation with member services? I have the phone number and confirmation number, but want to see if I'm able to confirm before paying.

No, non members may not call Members Services. They will not speak to anyone not a DVC member. Your reservation is between you and the DVC member you are renting from.
 
It wouldn't matter anyway... a dishonest renter could cancel your reservation anytime after you have paid. Renting is based on a lot more trust than many are comfortable with. Nonetheless, the negative renting experiences are few and far between.
 
You can call your resort about 5-7 days before you check in. Member Services transfers your reservation over to the resort at that time. Does your owner have references that you can check? Chances are every thing is fine. Have you talked with your owner? Do you have all his/her information? Is there something that has made you want to call all of a sudden? Are they easy to get hold of? Have they answered all of your questions? Are you using Disney's Magical Express? If you are, you will receive a package from Disney with Luggage tags and infor.
 

Here's something interesting I found out. I own at OKW/BWV but for our trip last week, I swapped points with another owner, so it wasn't my reservation. And yes, I was a bit nervous, too. I did call and they would not give out any info since it wasn't my membership the reservation was made nor were they agreeable to a three way call at my cost. However, they way I found out that my name was on the reservation was when I bought the tics to MVMCP. They confirmed my address to me, not me to them. Are you buying anything that needs to be prepaid, like Cinderella's or Hoop-DE-Doo? That might be a way to find out. Good luck.
