I've rented from timeshare owners I found on the TUG2.net site and Redweek.com site and saved lots of money over retail. I've done about a half dozen rentals over the last ten years in the Orlando area. The easiest rentals to get seem to be Cypress Pointe and Sheraton Vistana, both which I love. From an owner it needs to be a seven day rental. On Redweek.com if you see a rental you want to do (you can first sign on as a guest), you'll have to pay a $15 annual fee to contact the owner. On TUG2.net, anyone can access the classifed ads section for free and contact owners. Of course, there is more risk involved than a retail rental. To date, though, I've had extremely positive experiences, been very happy with the properties, and saved lots of money. Typically, I'll pay 1/2 at the time of booking, have the owner put the condo in my name, I'l contact the resort to make sure they have a reservation in my name, and then 30 days before the trip I'll pay the owner the rest of the money. I always get the owner's address and phone number and talk to them over the phone. Usually they seem like such a great person and will even offer people I can contact who rented from them before etc. making me comfortable with the whole thing.
