My husband had gastric bypass surgery. He lost about 200lbs. This was 3 yrs ago. The thing I am concerned about is this: he gets very embarrassed about what he can now eat and what he cant.. Unfortunately, he gets ill eating several foods.. he can handle chicken ok, sweets are not a problem but he has difficulty with beef products and even salmon due to the fact that they take longer to digest. Will the servers bother him about trying things.. or will I have to explain to them the he has difficulties? He hates when I try to explain to people what and why he cant eat things.

I think I would tell your servers up front that he can eat some foods easier than others so to not be concerned if he isn't choosing a variety of things. Be sure to also tell them that he will NOT be cleaning his plate but it doesn't mean he doesn't like the food. I don't see any reason to go into more detail.

You will have plenty of choices so he shouldn't have any problem finding stuff he can eat. Most of them aren't pushy about trying things.

I normally ate about half of what was served since that's the ONLY way I can maintain my weight but I told the servers at the beginning of the cruise that this was normal for me and they just accepted it. They did occassional ask if everything was Ok but when I said yes, the subject was dropped.

I really think you'll be plesantly surprised.

Thank you... it has been worrying me.. everyone talks about the food.. and I was concerned it would diminsh his trip if he was constantly asked about eating more.

Thanks again, B

Telling the servers up front that he won't be eating "the whole thing" should eliminate any "pestering" about food...although they will probably ask if there is anything special he would like.

They don't pester about quantity. But I think because they really want the EXCELLENT rating that is discussed on other threads, they are very concerned about the QUALITY and want to be sure that if you're leaving food it's not because you don't like something.

He'll have to be careful about the appetizers and salad since I almost filled up on those BEFORE the main course. They can also plate your dessert to take back to your room for a late night snack if you want.

i am coming up on my 5 year anniversary (next month!) for gastric bypass!! i went on the wonder last year and am going on the magic next year - since my surgery i have developed an allergy to citrus (refuses to digest!) - when we first got on the ship i found out where you had to go to report any allergies and went there (it is one of the clubs) - i met our head server and he took very good care of me! they are used to people having different problems - no need to be embarresed they will take great care of him!! nothing is ever forced on anyone on dcl!!

The server won't bother him at all about trying anything. Your hubby just orders what he wants, eats as much/little as he wants and he is good to go.
Your server is there to help explain menu items and serve them to you.

Now, if you go to Palo..they bring your a ton of food whether you ask for it or not..lol. This is in addition to the items you actually order. We can never eat it all, so we just leave it. Don't even worry about that.

Be sure to tell the servers about the surgery right away. I had gastric banding and my friend also had it and on the cruise we ended up having to tell them because they kept asking if the food was ok and saying "let me bring you something else if you didn't like it"....it wasn't that we didn't like it but that we could only eat less than half of what they brought!

Hi there,
I know you can contact DCL re: food allergies, you can fax them the particulars. I would look into contacting DCL food services, fax them what amount he's used to eating at a meal, so they could prepare the same foods as others but only the amount he's used to eating, to avoid any embarassment. Also, rest assured, chicken breast is always available if he doesn't like what is on the menu. Good luck, and have a great time.

I knew I could count on you.. WE ARE ONe BIG FAMILY!!

Both myself and my husband and my girlfriend (3 out of 4 of us) traveling on the members only cruise 9/4 has had bypass surgery with in the past year. I had planned on telling my server that we have had surgery and out stomachs are only so big and we can not eat a great deal of food. I do not anticipate any type of problems. When we dine out now I order only an appitizer becuase anytime I orderd a complete dinner I have always thrown it away. I am really lookuing foward to ordering anything and everything I want and tasting it all with no bill to face at the end! Our first reservation is for 8PM at Palos NO I WILL NOT be having desserts I can not tolerate sugars to well.
