Hi!

I just wanted to share a website with those of you who want to see a change in the way you're kids are exposed to junk food in their schools!!

Visit SchoolLunchAngels.org ( http://schoollunchangels.org/ ).......They have free downloadable packet that contains nutrition info., health statistics, and steps you can take to change the ways your kid's schools "do food"! :)

Although this site has been created anonymously, I do know the people who researched it and put it together. They are incredibly loving, knowledgeable, professionals and parents! Other concerned parents who have used this information are already making huge strides in favor of better haelth for all children!!

Go for it!! :sunny:

Thanks for reading, Dan!! :sunny:

I noticed that many people have a lot of opinions about this subject on another thread, so I posted the info. and linked it to the other thread. I'm not whinging but it does seem like people are happy to discuss or be concerned about the situation, but when given a potential solution....no takers. Hmmmmm. :confused3

As I have stated before if parents really want to help they need to contact their board of education and volunteer to be on their schools Wellness Policy committee. Every school in the nation that participates in the school lunch program is required by law to have a policy in place by June 30,2006. Also those same schools should already be following the UDSA requirements. I know my school system does. During the course of a week we have certain requirements we MUST follow according to the USDA such as the number of bread servings, fruits and vegetables, certain vitamins, etc. We have lots of fresh fruits and many reduced fat items. This year was the first year we were NOT required to offer whole milk so we eliminated it immediately at the beginning of the school year. We offer Fat-free,1%,2%, and lowfat chocolate. All of our juice we use for breakfast is 100% juice. We offer turkey hot dogs, turkey sausage, many whole wheat items and I myself purchase fresh frozen vegetables as much as possible as opposed to canned.

My food service director asked me to be on the committee as well as teachers and parents and students. We have started out with a very basic plan to get it written before the deadline arrives and then next school year we will have several meetings to make the plan more detailed.

There ARE schools out there that are already doing most of what was written about in those documents. As someone who orders from vendors for my school lunchroom people also have to understand that we can only order what is made available to us from the vendors and at a good price. So maybe instead of knocking the school the School Lunch Angels need to look more towards making better foods available and more competitive prices.

I am glad people are getting involved but all the blame con not be placed on school lunches. You should see what the kids bring from home!! AND you would cringe to see what things are thrown away by kids from Moms who really did try to pack a healthy lunch.

Where does the blame game really start? Was it the first places that had "all-you-can-eat" saladbars??? Was it the restaurants that started the bigger biggest doubles triples whoppers of sandwiches??? You figure when I was growing up a normal sized hamburger was the size in a kids meal it todays terms(and even kids meals are getting supersized).

Hmmmmmmm...
