I have a HP laptop it is about 2 1/2 yrs old. Everything is plugged in and it will not turn on. There are no lights, or sound of it running. Does anyone have any idea? Or is this past all hope?. If anyone has an answer I would love to here it good or bad. Thanks Jo

Sometimes the cords just go bad (or the plug part I believe) and do not fit well any more. Do you have another cable you can try? I have had to replace mine once (my laptop is 6 years old though) for that reason. I was bale to test that that was the reason with the kids' cable.

The power button on my has started to go now too but then you still some lights indicating it is charging). I find now i have to make sure I press down the entire length of the button and hold it for a second or two to get it to react.

Good luck. I am sure others will be along with things to try soon.

Thank you for replying, it may need a new cord. I have had nothing but problems with this one. Its also windows vista, I would love to change that to xp. I will try a new cord. I tried holding down the button. There is no lights, no running sound, no fan and screen just went black. I guess its better to laugh than cry. Oh well. :rotfl:

Give the cord a try then--it is worth looking into as it is a cheap/easy fix.

Also, I know this sounds obvious, but have you looked to be sure the battery has not been knocked lose? I have no idea how my kids managed to do that, but they did once:rotfl:

Well I have no children to blame, just the dogs:rotfl: But I guess I could check the battery. Thanks, at least I'm not the only one who is up late. Jo

I am in Germany so it is not late at all--9:30 in the morning. I have been up nearly four hours (have to get the kids to the train for school by 7:00--the mom equivalent of taking the dog for a morning walk I guess?). It is nice to have someone else up when I am for a change:goodvibes

Wow! Germany, nice way to talk and no long distance chrges!:lmao: Well your beautiful day is just starting, and sadly I must sleep as I babysit a dog. It was very nice chatting with you. Thanks again for all your input. Have a great day! Jo

I have an HP laptop at work that occasionally sits there dead when you try to turn it on...in my case, it was an issue with static discharge. What I have to do is: 1) unplug it, 2) pop the battery out, 3) hold down the power button for 20-30 seconds, 3) pop the battery back in. That should discharge any static and allow it to turn on. It's really annoying -- I'm not sure we'll ever buy any more HP laptops.

I have an HP laptop that isn't working right now. About a year ago it stopped working so I took it in to the repair shop. They charged me $60 to look at it, and told me the video card was bad. He didn't recommend replacing it though because it would be about $400 (the laptop originally cost about $1100 and was 3 years old at the time), but he could "sell me a new computer." I declined and the laptop sat for a few months, until our son could take a look at it. He took it apart, but just basically put everything back together and lo and behold it worked again! I really wanted to call that computer repair place and let them know, but I didn't. The computer worked fine for 2-3 months, and now the screen is black again. :( When you turn it on it lights up and you can hear it running, just no picture on the screen. I'm considering taking it to a new computer repair shop that just opened up recently and see what they have to say about it. The laptop isn't that old, and has had good care, so I hate to just throw it out.

I, too, don't think I would buy another HP.

Remove and reseat the battery. There have been dozens of times where that has done the trick for me. Sometimes even when plugged in the battery contacts not making a good connection will keep the power supply from turning on.

Do you have another monitor you can plug into the laptop? That may work if it's just an issue with the laptop screen.

I have no power at all, No lights work, no screen, no running fan, zip, zilch, nada. Oh the stupid computer! I did not want this one my DH did. I really appreciate everyone giving me suggestions, I guess I will have to wait til my DH comes home and see what we need to do. Oh well, it is just a material item. No stressing about it. It aint worth it. Thanks guys!! YOU ALL ROCK!
