Computer Question

My computer is quite old now (about 6 years) and although I've upgraded to XP and added memory and got rid of dial-up, I still have times when aol or explorer will just close down or I have pop ups of "virtual memory is low". I want a new computer but my question is what will happen to all of the things I have saved on this computer? Like my pictures, files, etc? Is there a way to transfer them to the new computer or do I have to start all over? TIA!

There are several ways of doing so.

My personal favorite is popping the old hard drive into the new computer as a slave. It does require a little research to figure out what jumper settings are needed on the old hard drive, and will only be possible if your new computer has a compatible bus (i.e., a ribbon cable inside with available ports that actually do fit into the old hard drive). This approach has many advantages: Assuming it is possible, it is the quickest, the most likely to result in no lost data, and it means that you don't have to worry about the next person who gets your computer (or who finds your hard drive in the trash) reading your data off the old hard drive.

The Dell person moved my files to my new computer using IntelliMover. It's a program designed for that.

If you purchase an Apple, they will transfer everything for you for free; just take your old machine with you when you are shopping. It is frustrating to buy a machine, then have to take it back to the store to transfer files. They offer this as a pay service at Best Buy, and probably other retailers.

IntelliMover is what we used as well. Worked like a charm and easy too.
