Computer Question Regarding "kernel" Errors

To any computer experts out there reading:

I have Windows ME operating system. The last few times I've tried to install some games for my kids on the computer, I cannot do it because I get varius kernel errors during installation. I meet all the system requirements listed on the game; however, most of them can no longer be installed. I'm thinking my Windows is falling short somehow. I admit, also, that I don't keep my computer up to date. I have e-mailed the different game manufacturers for help, but none of their fixes seem to help which tells me it is a problem on MY end.

Any suggestions. Should I try to reinstall my Windows? Someone told me that when I get errors like that I may be missing some things in my operating system.

I found this...........
I run Internet Explorer and periodically I will get a message that says error KERNEL 32 DLL or something like that. What does this mean? -- J.C., via Road Runner
The doc wishes Microsoft would take matters seriously for once and recall the bad versions of Windows (Windows 95, 98 and Me) so everyone could get on with their lives. Kernel errors mean the operating system can't figure out what to do -- can't operate, in other words. When this happens, Windows dies.
These versions of Windows need to be reinstalled now and then to get them cleaned out. A better solution is an operating system that operates properly. The doc likes Windows 2000, but Windows XP, any modern version of Linux and any current Macintosh all qualify.

ME is a tough OS to work with. Many have said that, I had it too. If your system is able to handle it (processor, memory, etc) I would upgrade to XP which is great.

I just upgraded from Me to XP Home Edition and the difference is amazing! The computer tech who installed my new operating system said Me does not handle memory well and XP is much better at managing resources. I also upgraded my memory from 128 MB to 384 MB but I think 128 MB is sufficient to run XP.

The only downside to getting the new operating system was that the computer tech insisted on wiping out my hard drive first. But I backed up everything I wanted to keep and it's like having a brand new computer (even though it's 3 years old)!

I don't know how much memory you have but that could be part of your AOL problems too (from a previous post of yours). 9.0 requires 128 MB by itself!! Major memory hog!! I still suggest going back to 8.0 Plus while you're on dial-up.

Thanks you guys! I suspected it was ME. I've checked everything out on my system and it seems I've got plenty of memory. I've had these "kernel" problems for awhile, so I guess it's the ME. What pisses me off is that I bought my current system (which came with ME) during the transition phase of ME to XP. I bought the computer in July and was told that I could come back to the store that following October with my receipt and I could get XP. Several "friends" talked me out of upgrading to XP because they heard, at that time, there were numerous problems with it. Oh well, so much for friends. I don't feel like shelling out the bucks for XP so I guess I'll just have to limp along.
