This is OT but yet I cannot afford to hire anyone to come over and fix this for me so it is budget. I am a computer novice. When I turn on my desktop HP all I get is a blank screen and a saying the monitor is going to sleep-then back to blank. How can I wake it up? I desperately need the printer as I cannot print from my laptop. Any help is gratefully appreciated

You might want to use your laptop to do a google search for the problem. There are several computer forums out there with techies who can direct you. Meanwhile. I'm going to move this over to the CB. Someone on there may be able to help you.

Does your CPU stay on or does it shut down

I had an HP that did that. Turned out to be the hard drive had gone. But it doesn't mean that's your issue. It could be a lot of things. Have you tried booting in safe mode?

You could hook the printer up to your laptop in the meantime.

the very first thing you should do is be sure there is a good connection between the monitor and the computer-the monitor is knowin that the power came on-but then not "seeing" the computer after that-possible causes-the connection between the monitor and the computer has come loose-the monitor cable has gone bad-the video card has gone bad-the hard drive has gone bad and the comuputer is not booting into the operating system-but-generally if the monitor can "see" the computer you will get some images on the screen at boot before it hits the operatining system-from the BIOS at least-so the most likely scenario is bad connections or bad video card-try checking your connections.
