My hotmail email account has sent the same email to everyone in my address book. :scared1:

I ran a virus scan on my computer (McAfee) and it come up clean.

I changed the password on my email account but I don't know what else to do.

I do check my email from my phone but I never send an email from it and can't open any links in email messages from the phone.

I've called everyone that I can (many were sent to people that I haven't contacted in years) telling them not open the message but what else should I do.

Any suggestions?

Is your hotmail account the same one you use on Facebook (if you have an account?)

Have you run anti-spyware and anti-malware scans? Not just anti-virus scans?

Same thing happened to me today - first time ever. I immediately changed my hotmail password. Sent out a blast to all my friends on Facebook telling them that it was fake - which everyone responded that they had figured that out for themselves (of course my mother sent it back to me with a note saying "I think you sent me this by mistake"). I also deleted that e-mail address from Facebook. Luckily I don't use that hotmail account for anything but junk stuff - it's not my "real" e-mail address. I also deleted my entire contact list from hotmail since I don't use it to send things anymore - but that's most likely too little, too late - since the e-mails were already sent.

At this point, other than changing your password (and change it other places as well if you are using the same one anywhere), and warning people and running the scans, I don't think there's much you can do.

I did a little reading on it this morning, and it can also be a spoofed e-mail - which is not the same as having your account actually hijacked with your password compromised, but I took the more conservative approach and assumed it was.

I do have a Facebook account but this email is not tied to it. I rarely post there because as my kids say, I'm too old to be on Facebook. ;) My Hotmail password is not the same as my Facebook password.

I'm going to see if Hotmail has a tech support that I can contact.
