I'm totally lost and frustrated. McAfee found something on my computer this morning (first time ever) and I can't do anything with it. If I click on Quarantine, Delete, or Clean it says "The file was not found". I've tried looking on McAfee's web site, but am just more confused than ever. I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Under scan information it says "Trojan Name: Generic Component, IRC....

Can anyone please help me or point me to a website explaining what I should do. Thanks in advance.

Is it possible that McAfee has already deleted/quarenteed it and is just letting know it found something? Depending on your settings it can be made to do that. Maybe run another scan and see if it finds it again. If it doesnt its probably been deleted already. This is just my opinion.

It is possible that the file has been dealt with. I'd run another scan using something other than McAffee, however, to be sure. I've used Panda software's antivirus in the past...it isn't memory resident and therefore won't interfere with your full time virus protection. google free panda antivirus if you want to try it out.

I have something on my system which McAfee finds, and immediately locks up my computer. As a result, I cannot complete a full virus scan. I think it is time to give up on McAfee, and Norton too. I'm going to switch to Microsoft One Care.

Okay, I ran McAfee again and this time it didn't find anything, so I guess it did clean it or something. I have AVG on my old computer. I think I'll download it on this one too. Unfortunately, my old computer turned itself off yesterday and now it won't turn back on. Does that mean its dead? Or can it be revived? Yesterday was just a bad day for me and computers.

Thanks for the replies

Yesterday I finally got the computer up and running again. It all started with updating McAfee Internet Security Suite. Once it was installed it claimed that Netscape was invalid and took two minutes (instead of 7 seconds or so) to log onto AOL to get email. After 4 days of gyrations (and things going from bad to worse) I finally had to call Dell technical assistance twice. I was on the phone with two different technicians, the first for 1.5 hours and the second for slightly over two hours. Both were wonderful, patient, spoke English, and walked me through erasing my hard disk and rebuilding it.

The Dell people said that they are getting a lot of calls from people in the same situation, having updated McAfee and the computer slowing to less than a crawl. I described the level of scanning as "Don't go out the front door of your house because you might be hit on the head with a meteor." I have now installed Norton Internet Security and, knock on wood, it seems to be running OK.

Luckily, when I started to have serious problems, I backed up my pictures and documents so they are reinstalled and available again.

Beware of Mcafee :scared1:

You've jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire, IMHO. I've been sticking with McAfee because of the horrible problems I've had with Norton in the past. They're both over-bloated trashware, IMHO.

I would look into CA's eTrust or Microsoft's OneCare. I don't know if either is "better" but I do know that both are "lighter" and less invasive (for now).
