Can someone explain to me how these things work? I am wondering if you have to pay a monthly fee and if it is compatible with any lap top computer...

Our company uses these through our cellular provider. We pay $60/month for unlimited use per card. Yes, you use them with a laptop. From what I've heard, the service isn't that great.

I believe I used one of these last very on our trip to Disney.. hubby needed to get online for work to check his emails, so his work gave him one. We loved it because we could get online almost anywhere. I was online the entire time through most of the southern states! lol The only time we had any issues was at the Fort Wilderness because of all the trees but once we had an open shot we were fine!

Does this mean I would have to pay $60 a month to use on 1 comp. from home..

The $60 / month is the fee for the card. It can only be used in a single laptop at a time. There is no way (that I know of) that multiple computers can share it.

If your requirements are for a laptop to get wireless whenever (and almost where ever) you travel, then it could be a good deal. If you are using it from home, and you need to hook up more than one computer, then it is not what you need.

Regarding the speed, if the area you are in has wireless broadband for that service, then the speed is not bad. If the area does not have wireless broadband, then it is quicker than dial up, but not great. Do some research with both Verizon and Sprint to see what they offer in the geographical locations you are planning on using the card.

I am a traveling consultant and I have one. While the response time is not as fast a true wi-fi or DSL connection, I have been able to dial in to my client's VPN (albeit at an agonizingly slow rate) and get some work done. I primarily use it while I am at my client to monitor my company's e-mail (I use a client PC for my day-to-day work).

I actually find it to be very reliable. I wouldn't use it as a primary means of connecting to the internet, but if you need it when out and about, it will do the job. Of course signal stength is key (just like any cell phone).

Regarding location, I live in SE MA, and have used th card in Miami FL and Omaha, NE with no problems.
