Compression/travel socks

Just wondering how many of you use them when flying and where you got them and how much you paid? Did they work?
DS13 had one ankle a bit swollen last year so want to get some for him but i am thinking with the longer flight to Dallas we should probably all get some.

They're pretty good, but I think it's just as important (if not more) to get up regularly and walk around a bit. Also drink plenty of water.

I agree that the walking and the water are key. I just bought knee highs from the supermarket that were like a 70 denier or something, it said on the package that it helped with swollen ankles etc.

hi there

DH gets swollen ankles..so here's his tips:

drink lots of water
get a pillow/bag, pop it on the floor and push feet up and down on it....the resistance works wonders
compression socks, put them on before you get in the air, as its easier to get them on before they start to swell
go for a walk to the loo every few hours, but be careful not to step into "puddles"
massage your calves
DONT sit on your feet, even if its more comfy...

I had a swollen ankle flying back from Dubai once so have worn the high denier stockings since then and haven't had any more problems. I'm really naughty about not walking around on flights and not drinking enough too and am working on it.. I'd do anything to avoid the plane toilets

Stockings might not be a good option/great look for your teenage son though! So you might want to check out a product like Scholl Flight Socks which you can buy from pharmacies or places like Kathmandu, and should cost around $15-20. I was a pharmacy assistant when I was at uni and remember these being really popular and a good and cheaper alternative to the traditional compression garments like TED stockings (which are expensive, need professionally fitted and are really overkill unless there is a pre-existing medical condition such as a previous stroke etc.)

We use the socks as well. I was able to get black ones for DH and I normally use the skin-tone ones. We wear them like normal socks. From memory on the types we have you only get 4 wears or washes out of them. But I can't remember for sure, the packet is in with the travel gear, but I know the ones we have are ok for the upcoming trip.

MIL had a special type for the last trip as she is a lot older and recommended by the GP. He said DH and I were fine with the ones from the chemist.

Thanks everyone I got Unisex travel support socks from Coles in the hosiery section they are medium compression the boys are happy to wear them even though they still look a bit like stockings but they are black and they both said they will be wearing long pants anyway. They are actually dark enough that they look like socks.
They were $7.79 each DS10 wants to know after trying his on if he can where his for footy they really do just look like socks i got him and DD 12 the one size fits all ad the rest of us Tall.
