My chiro suggested I get a pair of compression tights for running. I have knee pain and she thought that might help. My question is do all running tights create a compression effect or do I need to buy a specific brand like CW-X to get the compression benefits? Or will my UA or Adias tights do the same thing?

TIA:)

I've found a big difference in the compression effects between my regular running tights and my compression tights. If you're after strong compression, I'd go with a pair designed to do that and not just a general purpose pair.

I do not currently own a pair of CW-X compressions but would love to. I don't actually know of any other brand that would compare. Maybe someone can add that info. The "regular" tights are what I currently use to keep the "chub rub" at bay. If/when you get the compression variety I'd love to hear what you think.

I am interested in knowing if people like the compression tights.

I have medical grade compression for my arms & legs (I have a prescription to get them). I am thinking of thinking of buying some over the counter compression that looks more normal & sporty though.

Last year for Christmas hubby got me a pair of the compression tights and while they are not the most flattering look (I'm NOT a size 3, if you know what I mean) I did notice that my legs did not feel as tired and I did not have issues with shin splints. In addition, I train in the cold midwest and found that the compression tights kept my legs remarkably warm.

I run in CW-x tights and shorts and use Skins and other brands compression wear for recovery. CW-x tights are not true comression tights but are more along the lines of Kinesio taping. They are constructed of two types of fabric that create the taping effect. I swear by them for running.

Is there any sorts of risk using them without having consulted a doctor first? Or are they pretty standard use type things?

There is not that much compression - I guess I should say if sized correctly. If you are marathon/half marathon ready the tights should be OK. I do wear my full compression tights on the way home to limit the exposure to deep vein thrombosis.

I know this is going to sound like a silly question but do they make compression shorts? I need it more for my hip and since I mostly wear shorts here in South Florida I wouldn't get much use out of tights.

Coach-

I am curious about the tights, but I am not sure they are suitable for Florida running. It was 83º F here today.

I kinda' Tricia on the "hips" thing, but am always up for some experiments. But I am kinda' worried about the "overheating thing"

Did I mention it was 83º here today??

Answered mine and Jim's question - yes they have shorts for both men and women. But holy moly they are expensive - around $70 :scared1: :scared1:

These look just like what I need - the compression seems to be in the right places for my hip!!

I guess the KT tape gets expensive too after awhile so it might be worth it especially since I haven't had good luck since the Goofy putting on the tape and it actually sticking. Can't afford the shorts right now but maybe I can get myself a pair for Christmas.

Are these the same? They are only in size Large, but if that is your size (and they are the same) looks like a deal!

As a fellow Floridian, shorts are required to run in!!

Mine are more bike pant like Those seemm to highlight the area the TSA is groping.

A little more seriously, the knee or bike pant length shorts will assist with keeping the IT band calmed douring the run.

This is the female version of what I wear when temps go above 60F...

As a frame of reference a comparable pair of Pearl Izumi bike shorts will run 90-200 retail so while pricey, not all that bad.

Jim, can't tell, are you complaining or bragging?

That's most likely complaining. I can't believe how hot it is still - I about died  on Sunday trying to do my 18 miles (only got 15.3 miles in)

That's a good deal on the shorts for $29.99 unfortunatly I think I would need a medium in order to get the true compression from them. But those do look like they might help. I have a problem with my piriformis and not IT so my knees don't bother me its mainly the hip area.

I think the cw-x tights are far superior to regular ones. It is an entirely different feel. I've only worn them twice (once a few weeks ago for the philly half), but I am a true believer so far. I think they made a tremendous difference in my level of knee pain.

My CW-X tights are on their way! I fell in between a small and medium on the size chart. I did go to a store to try them on and the small was a bit on the snug side but the medium was too loose around the waist. I guess it's a good incentive to keep my eating clean! Will post back when I take them for a run.

I'm also thinking about ordering a pair of CW-X capris for the full in January. Assuming the weather wasn't as cold as it was this year, will I be too hot running in them? I'm getting the non-insulator pair but I see from the RunningWarehouse website that they're still rated for temps between below 30 and up to 55. :goodvibes

I guess maybe the better question is what has the finishing temp on marathon day been in the past.

TIA

Hi Vicky. I have some non insulated capris that I wear between about 25 to 50ish degrees. If the weather for the marathon starts in the 50s, I'll probably wear shorts. Anything below that, I'll be wearing the capris. The averages for that time of year are lows right at 50, so I think it will be close to that at 5:00 am. But, it could be like this year. :scared1: Or, it could be hot. Not good either. If you think you could use the capris for other times, it wouldn't hurt to have them, right?;)
