Complicated KTTW Ticket Upgrade Questions

We are getting YES (homeschool) program tickets, but we want to get Free Dining. So we will probably buy 2 Day Tickets for our room of 2 Adults and 2 Kids to get Free Dining for our stay.

My parents and brother (3 adults) will need tickets as they are only booking a room and coming later than us and do not qualify for the homeschool tickets.

So assuming we remove the tickets from our KTTW and get paper tickets as I have read you can do:

Can you change 1 of the child tickets to an adult ticket by paying the difference in price? If not, we will have to save the 2 x 2Day Child tickets for later and buy the 1 adult ticket right?

We can upgrade the 2 Day Tickets to 3 or 4 Day Tickets by paying the difference after we get the 2 Day Adult Tickets on paper, right? Is it better to upgrade them before use or after 1 use? They will be full price since we are doing the Free Dining.

Will any of this mess up our dining credits?

Thank you in advance for any help!

1) yes you can get them removed from your KTTW.
2) yes you can upgrade them, even going from a child to adult
3) use them first before upgrading since they are likely pre price increase
4) depending on the ages of your kids you may want to upgrade one child to an adult since the ticket will be used by an adult anyways.

An adult cannot use a child's ticket to qualify for the "use first" recommendation. That ticket would have to be upgraded pre-use, and you would pay the full difference between the credited purchase price of the ticket and the target ticket. In the end it costs just as much as buying the adult ticket directly.

The other two can use the adult tickets first, then upgrade so if they were purchased pre-price updates they will be bridged to the ticket's current gate value and the upgrade cost calculated from that.

As for your dining credits, as long as you get them separated from your KTTW card at the resort, there should be no problems.

I have been told several times by guest services as long as there is an active dining plan on the KTTW cards they cannot remove the tickets and give you paper tickets. You might want to call and verify before you go.

Like I said, you need to do it at the resort, with the resort concierge. They can do it. (Whether they know they can or think it can be done is a different problem :)) It's done all the time.

The ticket booths and park guest services can also do it, but they are more likely to mess up your dining credits, so they may just say they can't.

To ensure that there is no problem with your dining credits, just leave one KTTW card with the ticket on it. Then try to use one of the other KTTW cards to verify that the credits are correct. If they're not, use the "unaltered" card for your dining and go back to the resort and fix the other keys.

This will work particularly in your case, since you only need to remove 3 of the 4 tickets from the cards.

Okay I am a little confused, but I appreciate the replies.

After posting I read that you can change the age of a child to make them a junior and then the ticket would be an adult. I have an 8 year old I could make a 10 year old. The other child could use her two days instead of our YES tickets or just save them for later.

I read that resorts do not print paper tickets only more cards like the KTTW. So "As for your dining credits, as long as you get them separated from your KTTW card at the resort, there should be no problems. " Is THEM the tickets or the dining credits being removed?

So if I removed all the park tickets off of the KTTW when we arrive at guest relations to make them paper, this could somehow mess up the dining credits? The dining credits are valid on all cards, right? Or only the adults that have charging privileges? If I left the one child ticket on her card, would that be enough to keep the dining credits and just use her card the whole trip to get the food?

We have not booked yet, so we would be paying current pricing.

Thanks!

I have heard of children being designated as juniors, but generally for dealing with the dining plan (children can only choose from the childrens menu, which doesn't suit some older children), but I'm not 100% sure that you get an adult ticket out of that.

THEM is your tickets. This should be done ONLY by the resort concierge. They should know how to do it without messing up your dining credits and should also be able to verify your credits afterwards. Doing it anywhere else risks problems with your dining credits which will take time out of your day to straighten out. I don't think it happens as often as it used to but it does still happen.

Since the resort do not have the "paper" (really Tyvek) tickets to print on, they will give you a separate KTTW card but it will be printed with what the ticket type is rather than your reservation info and won't open doors, etc.

When you upgrade, you will be re-issued tickets on the standard Tyvek ticket stock.

I like snykymom's advice...leave one ticket un-upgraded for now on the KTTW card and have that with you just in case until you know you are all set. Then once you know its fine, upgrade that one (unless you are saving it for future anyways...)

Thanks so much! I am pretty sure a "10 year old" would get an adult ticket unless there is a mystery junior ticket that is not sold elsewhere except with the dining plan since 10 and up is an adult. We are getting the Quick Service plan so the meals will not really make a difference for us as from my understanding child and adult meals are not separated.

We will separate the 3 tickets at arrival at the resort onto new KTTW cards. We will then try the altered KTTW cards at the resort to make sure they have the dining plan.

Thank you everyone for your help!

"Junior" is only for room reservations for kids with an adult ticket but not an actual adult.

For the QS plan, if you are listed as 2A and 2C then the CM will only allow you to buy no more than 2A meals and/or 2C meals at one time. You can't use kids credits to purchase an adult meal unless no kids meals are available.

OK, I did quick research.

You CAN upgrade a child to an "adult" as far as the DDP goes, and it DOES require upgrading the ticket as well (that is what I was not sure of). This basically makes them a "designated junior" (junior being used just for room occupancy reasons - more than two true adults in a room requires an extra fee).

This is what is being referred to. An in this case, the ticket is an adult ticket and then can be used by a different adult at a later time if unused.

Thanks. I realize it is more legitimate that way. We would then I assume have 3A 1C (or does it say 2A 1J 1C?) on our KTTW if we make my 8 year old a junior which we are fine with paying for. I do not want to cheat. I simply have read that the system does not actually separate out the meals by child and adult for the credits for the QS plan, and it would be hard for us to keep track of them. We would probably never buy 3A and 1C meals at once anyways (at least not until everyone arrives) since we want to save some meals for my parents and brother.

So if you have Yes tickets you can add a couple of reg. tickets to your room stay and you are able to get free dining for the length of your stay - say you are staying for 10 days? Sorry to jump on your question but I am so confused by that.

Unless you are a DVC member staying on points or an AP holder, you need to get a "package" deal to get the DDP, where a "package" is defined as a room plus tickets. A minimum 1-day base MYW ticket is required.

To get "free" dining, you MUST get a room/ticket package (even for DVC and AP), and it often requires a 2-day base MYW ticket.

But there is no requirement that you use those tickets at all. If you already hold a valid ticket (like an AP), you can still use that. MYW tickets do not expire while unused, and therefore can be saved and upgraded for a future trip.
