Compact Fluorescent or Incandescent Light Bulbs?

We bought special daylight CFLs for our cat.

Yes, but I am thinking reptiles and poultry. Keepers of both use incandescent bulbs not so much for the light, but the heat.

If people would just have switched most of their bulbs voluntarily then there wouldn't be any need for government to have gotten involved, but yet-again we have a situation where people were fixated on making decisions for themselves in total denial of their impact on others and society-in-general. Selfishness begets painful government regulation.

I'm pretty sure any response I make to that will get the thread killed.

When we moved in, the entire house was outfitted with CFL. We've since replaced 90% of them with incandescent. I refuse to have CFL in any rooms with carpet because of the mercury.

I hope you removed the rest of the mercury containing products out of your rooms with carpet. I think many people use the mercury excuse without fully being educated about it's true risk, other sources of it in the common home, etc.

We've noticed no difference in our energy use before or after the replacement. A couple of the remaining CFLs have burnt out in the past week. Since recycling them in our area means a trip to the dump 30 minutes away, they'll be going in the trash. Somehow driving a hour round trip to dispose of 2 lightbulbs seems to negate any energy savings.

You don't have a Home Depot or Lowes closer? They all recycle CFLs (we have other places close to us too). When ours died, we didn't drive out of the way to recycle it, rather we kept it in a small box in one of our hallway closets and just grabbed it when we needed to stop off at Home Depot for something else.

I agree to a point...I'm not a big fan of government intervention, but unfortunately people rarely change on their own, they often need to be impacted in their pocket book or by elimination of another option.

They could still send the Light Bulb Police after all the light bulb stockpilers. Instead of going after the militant extremists in Montana, they will send in the Light Bulb Police to go after the little old lady, who is so nearsighted she prefers light bulbs to knit by, because she can see her stitches better with the old incandescents. :scared1:

Light Bulb hoarders will be quite easy to spot. Anyone who has a little sliver of yellow-cast light peeking through a gap in their heavy curtains will be known to be an illegal light bulb hoarder. :sad2:

I know this is said somewhat in jest, but you do realize the light of an incandescent is described as color temperature and lumens, and like incandescents, CFLs are sold in various versions of each of these measures, allowing them to produce similar light.

But, then Light Bulb Police will be fitted with special Incandescent spotting goggles. :cool2: ;)
