Commissary in Orlando?

I thought I read somewhere there is a little commissary, near the airport, and an ITT that sells the Military Salute tickets?

We can do Publix or Wal-Mart but figured if there was a commissary, we'd probably go there instead. And avoid paying tax for our tickets at the front gate.

SOG is our backup for the tickets.

Does anyone know?

It's not a large commissary, but here is a link about it

That picture looks plenty big for what we need (cereal, milk, OJ, apples, spaghetti)

Thanks so much!

After looking the at Commissaries.com website, I didn't see that store referenced on their store locator, which leads me to think...

...the Navy Exchange (NEX), which is still operating at that site in Orlando, is most-likely running a Mini-Mart ("Shoppette" in AF/Army parlance) type operation, as food sales go. If that's the case, the prices for the limited assortment of items sold there will most likely be much higher than Walmart/SuperTarget/Publix, and wouldn't be worth the time/gas spent to get there.

If anyone is looking for a traditional commissary on the way to WDW, the closest ones are at MacDill AFB (Tampa) and Patrick AFB (Cocoa Beach/Melbourne).

As I am an I-40/I-75 traveler, I have the option of making commissary "pit stops" on the way down at Arnold AFB, TN, which is a small store and super-easy to navigate (there are also full stores at Robins AFB in Warner Robins, GA and Moody AFB in Valdosta, GA).

We were always satisfied with the prices, and I honestly thought it was a bonafide commissary...but my internet research this morning says it's part of the Navy Exchange.

It's an easy stop.

We'll be there in 2 weeks --- stopping at the NEX/ITT to get our park tickets, so I will report back on whether the food prices are comparable or over the top. We'd rather stop there, near the airport, than at SOG for the park tickets so we'll be hitting that location anyway.

I would be interested to hear more info if you make the trip over there. When DH and I travel, we like to visit the different bases and check out what they have available. I had read about this one on Steve's site and thought we might check it out in the future.

I'm not sure they can come any smaller than ours at Ft. Benning, but they probably do. I love the one at Keesler AFB in Biloxi

Also, something to consider when purchasing grocery-items from AAFES/NEX/MCX (as opposed to a Commissary)...

...all of the exchange operations are in a business to make some sort of a profit (which mostly goes into the installation's MWR fund) -- Commissaries, of course, sell their merchandise "at cost", plus the 5% surcharge (which funds facilities, employee salaries, etc.)

Also, something-else to consider -- groceries are tax-exempt in the state of Florida, which defnitely puts any "pit stop" to the NEX (the retail store which some of you are casually referring to as "the commissary") in question (if you are pressed for time, and perhaps, money). With both Walmart and Target being heavy into the grocery business in the Orlando area (WM has opened grocery-only "Neighborhood Markets" in the area, while Target has numerous "SuperTarget" stores near the WDW gates), you pretty-much know what you're getting from those retailers -- plus, in the case of the WM Neighborhood Markets, it's easy to get "in and out" (unlike their traditional Supercenters)...

It is definitely smaller than the commissary at Ft. Benning. :)

If you like visiting old military bases, it is kind of interesting. There is a B52 on display not too far from where the commissary is located. B-52 Memorial Park You can see it on google map--it is on Bear Road just south of FL528

Well, I figured the one in Orlando was, but most of the others we have been in were larger. We really need a new larger one, but can't see that happening. That place is always crowded and the shelves not kept well stocked lately.

Thank you for the info on the B-52, I am sure Dh would love to see it. He wants to go to Robbins AFB soon, we aren't too far from there. And, I believe Dobbins AFB.

Hey Suzanne, don't know if its still around but if you and hubby like Warbirds Jeff and I found a Warbird museum/restoration
Place in Kissimmee at the airport there. Granted, this was 18 years ago (pregnant with oldest) but it was called Flying Tigers something and was really cool. They had all kinds of stuff in various stages of renovation, even a Vampire (British fighter) owned by Travolta. They had ride alongs available too. Jeff was able to go up In a AT6 trainer and take the stick dance he had his private certificate.

Thank you, I will look into it. My husbands loves all kinds of old war planes.
