With the new stroller rules my daughters special needs stroller is too big. So it looks like I need to find a comfortable wheelchair for our upcoming trip. Anyone know any good ones? We need high/adjustable push handle, way for it to be shaded (she can’t hold an umbrella so the stroller cover was wonderful), high back so she can take naps (when in sensory overload she will close her eyes and fall asleep much better than sensory meltdown) and preferably reasonably priced because she really only needs it for the parks. She is 11 almost 5 feet tall and over 100lbs. Where should I go look?

Check Orlando Medical Rentals for stroller rental options (or then look for those models to purchase). They have a few that might fit your needs, including:
  • Adaptive Star Lassen Pushchair
  • Drive Trotter Pushchair
  • Special Tomato Jogger

You might also look at Convaid. At least some models have an optional canopy. I don't know if the rentals include the canopy but it is available when purchasing.

Enjoy your vacation!

Do the new rules apply to special needs/medical strollers? I know some wheelchairs front to back are longer than the allowed dimensions, and widthwise for some of the 400+ pound models, and there are no changes for them (not that it would be allowed to be banned as it's medical/disability).

My understanding of the dimensions is it’s the maximum for doorways and pathways in and around the parks. I honestly don’t know if exceptions might be made, but if so the person would need to be aware they may be limited in where they can go.

With regards to strollers, there may be a shorter/narrower alternative. Most special needs strollers that don’t fit will be due to length rather than width. As for very wide wheelchairs, again I believe the restriction is due to doorways and pathways, so a wider wheelchair may be considered a safety hazard because it could block passage for others. But even a 30” bariatric wheelchair fits the dimensions, so I don’t think that’s going to be an issue except for unusual circumstances.

Enjoy your vacation!

Thank you I will look into those.

That is my frustration at the moment I don’t know if the new rules apply to special needs. We have used our stroller for the last 3 years at Disney very successfully and very needed for my child. But figure I need a plan b just in case.

Yes our stroller which we have used for the last 3 years at Disney World and Disneyland is narrow enough just longer than 52 inches. Do you know models of stroller for larger children that fit the new guidelines because that is what I am trying to figure out.

I believe any of those that I listed above fit within the new guidelines.

Enjoy your vacation!
