We still wear ours in situations where our youngest needs to wear one. He is partially vaccinated though so we have an end in sight. I don't think he really cares though and would understand if we were mask-free and he wasn't. Most kids are pretty flexible and not nearly as bothered by mask rules as some adults are. I know it varies by state but our kids have been wearing them all year at school, clubs and sports.

My youngest is 8, and with two older siblings, he's well aware of where everyone in the family is with regard to vaccination - I don't think he'll have a problem wearing one indoors even if the rest of us aren't. Like yours, he hasn't had a problem with it all year - he's the most likely of all of ours to leave it on even when he doesn't have to.

Well, Greg Abbott banned masks in public schools about a week ago, effective June 1. So masks are done in Texas.

Masks are still being strongly encouraged in our school district. Based on the behavior of our district this year, I suspect the majority in our district will continue to wear them until the vaccine is approved for younger kids. Our district has been very proactive partnering with non-profits and pharmacies to set up mass vaccination clinics for our eligible teens and will likely continue with that effort once the vaccine is approved for the younger kids.

Not all of Texas feels the way you do. I live in TX too and my community seems to still be overwhelmingly supportive of masks . Of course, we faired much better than the majority of the state during the surge probably because of that.

And if it makes you comfortable keep wearing them. Pretty ones, sparkly ones. No makeup required is a bonus! As long as no one expects to burden me by forcing me to wear one to make them feel better I am fine. Prolonged masking gave my child respiratory infections. Glad to be done with that. I dont demand other people administer the HPV vaccine to all their kids to make ME feel safer. I dont demand other people never eat peanuts around me in case of an allergic reaction. I dont exepct everyone in the world to stop driving until EVERYONE EVERYWHERE is confirmed to be wearing a seatbelt. Freedom to choose is a wonderful thing.

Pubic health? I know it's crazy, but some people actually care about the welfare of other people and their community as a whole.

A child or staff member can still choose to wear them in TX. School districts can’t mandate it. I live in the Houston area. I think almost every district (maybe all of them) here has said they’re complying with the governor’s order. The only place that’s making the news for wanting to continue mask wearing is Austin area districts. I’m not saying they’re the only ones, but they’re the only ones making the news here. Austin is very different than anywhere else in TX. I’m saying that as a proud UT grad too! If someone wants to continue to wear a mask, they should be allowed to do that in my opinion. If they don’t want to continue to wear one, then they shouldn’t.

Regarding teaching jobs here, they’re scarce and VERY competitive right now. I know quite a few teachers, and the overwhelming majority are going to stay at their current jobs. My friend is an assistant principal, and she said they’ll have so many candidates for a particular teaching position that they’re having to do weed out talks before formal interviews. We have a TON of people moving here from out of state. The housing market is insane.

Many of the teachers here wanted to get rid of the masks a very long time ago because it was hard for the students to hear or understand them. I went up to the school on the last day to help clean up some stuff, and almost every teacher had taken off their mask after the kids left. My kids had a great year being back in-person the whole time. I’m so grateful they were able to go back rather than doing virtual.

They aren't banned as of June 1st. They aren't allowed to be mandated. Our district is strongly encouraging the continuation of masking, but obviously they can't make someone wear a mask in school after June 1st. I live in an area (you can probably guess where...starts with an A) that is more mask compliant than other parts of the state. HEB isn't mandating them either and 99% of the people at my HEB are continuing to wear them. I have no idea what fall will bring for our kids in school, but I suspect from the behavior of my kids and their friends that mask wearing will continue for a while longer even though it isn't mandated. Most people I know seem to feel comfortable waiting until younger kids have a chance to be vaccinated and keeping our community transmission as low as possible.

Agreed. My state's mask mandate was for 5 and up anyway, and up to this point, my 3 year old has never worn a mask during the height of the pandemic and she's not about to start now.

The county's mandate is for show. It's not actually enforceable due to the Gov's order.

I care about those poor people with asthma and copd who cant wear masks and have been sidelined from everything for a year and the deaf who have been isolated with near zero communication and those who suffered anxiety isolation and suicidal thoughts from lockdowns. I am happy they now get the chance to live life again. Empathy works both ways not just what makes one group comfortable.

Funny. My husband and daughter both have asthma and have no issues wearing a mask. My daughter was in a KN95 for 9 hours at school today. Our close family friend has advanced COPD and we have all been extremely worried would contract Covid because his COPD would put him at very high risk for complications/death. Again, wears a mask. My family, who has taken this virus very seriously, understands the social isolation very well, and I don't understand why you would think I wouldn't want to "live life again." I'm the one advocating for people to take the public health measures to reduce the spread of this virus so we can get back to life again.
