Been a while since I have been on boards... I have just completely let myself go so now that I literally have no clothes that fits and refuse to buy more here I am again. Not that its a bad thing and although I feel corner and/or forced to do this again I am excited about it all. Of course I'd like to skip the work and go straight to results. Anyway I am home now not having to return to work until april, kids are in school all day so I really have no excuse not exercise etc. I have plenty of time. So, as of today I am going to begin a low carb diet. I know its not very popular these days but it really did work for me very well and it wasnt too for me to adjust to! As a matter of fact, when I began NOT watching what I ate I still had low carb habits! So I'm off to the store today, definitely gonna do my walk away the pounds video and try to drag my treadmill thru the snow from my shed and fingers crossed (it works!!). Gonna log all my food ever evening here as well. As of today, I weighed 188! YIKES!! havent weighed that much is sooooo long!! My goal is 140! Till tonight...
:confused3

Those clothes can be a great motivator!

I'm a Walk Away the Pounds fan too, and I am also doing Sports Active on the Wii. You have a good period of time to get a good exercise routine going; between that and a sensible eating plan you will be all set for success. :thumbsup2

Sooo true about the clothes. I am down to wearing the same 3 black skirts with different tops. I'd like to add some pants into the mix since it is negative-something with the wind chill and I have a brisk walk from the parking garage to work - but unless i wear 'em with what I call a sucker-in-her (those Spanx things), it isn't going to happen. So off with my shivering legs I go.
I don't know if this will help but it helped me: someone told me that if you do something 28 days in a row, it becomes a habit. So for 28 days straight I woke up and got to the gym at 5AM - 6AM. Now my internal clock goes off at 4:25AM. I'm not saying that will be "your" habit, just wanted to let you know it worked for me! That's the best time for me to go to the gym due to my work schedule, DH's work schedule and the kids school schedules. I'd love to be able to go at night but momthe-tax-driver and home-work tutor is on duty! :scared1:
Now I am trying the 28 day plan with adding 8 glasses of water to my diet and cutting out one snack a day/ I'll let you know if it works.
Best of luck with sticking to your low carb plan!!:cheer2:

Clothes can be a BIG motivation factor. Totally in the same boat. I wear the same thing every day. I'm also doing a low-carb type plan called Fat Flush. I keep reading about the walk away the pounds dvds. I think I'll see if my library has those... My starting weight and goals are similar to yours. It sounds like you know what you are doing, having done it before. You can do it!

thanks all for posting! Its good to know Im not the only one....not that i wish others to be in the same distress but definitely a motivator! I ended up (reluctantly) going to check out a gym....was equivalent to dragging a dog into vet! but got there! walked in a made light of it all, I didnt even greet the employee, I simply said "help! my clothes dont fit" lol! she thought that was funny and was delighted to help! Last time I started out at Curves but there isnt one around and 3 months into that program it wears off and no longer works! My TM was great but my husband stored it BEHIND the shed NOT IN the shed...so thats garbage now...and I have never really been part of a real gym but, this place seems cool. Mostly people my age etc. I worked out only for about 40 minutes but am going back today to join. There are lots of classes, price is right and its not to far. i am eager to do some classes (like yoga and spinning) but dont think Im ready for that just yet, after about a month! I also went food shopping and by the end of the night I totaled about 35 carbs (give or take). I know official atkins is 20 a day but just gonna start out slow. All in all not a bad first day! and YES clothes is a huge factor...as a matter of fact gonna get out my skinny jeans and hang them up in my room...try them on every week! I know as of now I prob cant get them past my thigh! lol

the 28 day theory sounds great! im shooting for that!

and the walk away the pounds dvd are great if you cant get outside and walk. the first couple of minutes seems low intense but your sweating half way thru!

Take care all thanks again for posting!
:flower3:

OMG! am i feeling it today...yesterday was my first workout at gym and i am soooo sore today! My workout was 20 minutes on TM ab machines, arms, then 10 min. on eliptical followed by 10 min. on bike. dranks lots of water and kept carbs at again approx. 35. I also went to movies so had my first hurdle cause I LOVE popcorn...I brought pistachios which kept me busy the whole time. although I am hurtin I think I am still gonna go today ( I actually really want to!!) maybe just do cardio. till tomorrow.

:scared1:
185.8

Today is day 4! I worked out yesterday although in pain from the day before! 20 min. on TM a lil over a mile....then worked on abs and legs! that was all though. I wanted to do more cardio but hurt too much! I stayed under 30 carbs too! Although, I don't expect to lose quickly my scale is acting up! Literally UP! lol its a digital and pretty expensive but dont think its working properly. this morning said 190!!! thats insane lol.... anyway my sister and I are challenging one another as of last night. We weighed on this particular scale which we probably shouldnt have but as it stood she was 182 I was 186...so we decided that whoever is the first to lose 40 pounds has to treat the other one to a spa day! Think ill start using scale at gym! Anyway.. this morning I was upset I couldnt get to gym due to a dentist appointment but i do plan on going after! Hubby may come with me too! Till tomorrow...

I can't remember what really happens, that is, the science behind it all, but literally, when a person who hasn't worked out in a while starts working out, weight typically increases. It's almost like a starvation mode. Your body is a little freaked out by the demands that you are making on it. It has a tendency to hoard in order to be sure to meet the new demands.

What you may find is that you will gain weight for a bit, and then, suddenly, you will drop a tremendous amount of weight.

To combat the body hoarding, you need to refuel after a work out. There are studies that show that dairy is one of the best refuelings. The deal is that you have energy stored in your muscles. When you work out, you will use the energy stored in your muscles first. This energy is the potential to fuel a fight or flight situation. After you have depleted this stored energy, depending on heartrate, your body will either sense that it has the time to dip into your fat stores and convert that to needed energy (the fat burning zone) or it will seek other sources (carbs and proteins) to convert to fuel your activity.

SO. What you need to do, is make sure that you give yourself some time in the fat burning zone when you work out. Refuel your muscle energy (carbs only) within 30 minutes of your workout. Drink a TON of water, because your water needs increase when you exercise.

Don't be discouraged by the weight gain. It is totally natural. It means that you have shocked your body with your activity. Consider it a good thing. Ride the wave out, you've got a big drop in your future.

Way to go!!!

Congratulations on getting started again and the challenge with your sister is a great way to motivate both of you!

Don't worry about the weight gain. I know it's discouraging, but the previous post is right, this happens to lots of people when they first start working out. I know it's going to happen to me next week when I begin again, and I"m trying to mentally prepare myself for it! ;)

Keep up the great work!! It'll come off!! :thumbsup2

Thanks TX and Kids for responses...Yea i didnt let it get to me too much, honestly I really did think it was the scale and IT WAS thank god! Makes sense though about a true weight gain I mean I guess gaining muscle could weigh..right? Turns out after the gym I went a bought a good ole fashion cheap scale (the gym didnt have one) and got home and weighed 180 exactly! So even though I begin weighing 188 on the first scale and the second scale says 180, I may not have technically lost but still sounds good in my head! lol! After I read both your post though I went up just now and tried both...the new says 179..(which of course is great because it a pound less that yesterday) then experimented with the old one that went back down to 185..talk about nuts ......Mon.188 tues 186 wed 185 thurs 190!! Anyway done with the scale drama...I know to some i shouldnt worry to much about it but truth is i am a scale junkie!! I did go to gym and still a lil sore so didnt go crazy but had a good workout and stuck to 30 under carbs! So still on track...got my blackberry stored with some music now plan to lose myself in that today doing cardio! yesterday wwas my first time out with family and was put to the test when everyone decided we should eat fast food...so just went with it order a whopper took the bread off no fries! i got home and looked up the carbs and couldnt beieve it 53 carbs (with bread) 3 carbs (without) so althouhg i dont typically like to eat fast food if I find myself in that situation, I can stick to plan! Till tomorrow.
:)

omg!!!!! its saturday and got up at 530 to go to gym!! thats a first! lol... yesterday I did TM for half hour 2 miles worked on ab machines and some arms.. then just got weak! I tried the other cardio machines but was just too tired! lol.. I plan on continuing everyday and next friday Ill take my first class (yoga). I have been lurking around the classes! There is a window to watch they just look so hard and of course a bit intimidating! however my neighbor is now coming to gym so if I convince her to take a class I know Ill feel more comfortable! So the scale just under 180...and I know it takes time I just dont feel any different yet! In the past I just remember seeing results so quickly! I guess its true when they say it gets harder when your older! lol.... till tomorrow
:)

Woo hoo, good for you to get to the gym so early on a weekend!

Have you done yoga classes before? I did them when we lived in Chicago and loved it. I need to get back into it, but the times at the health club are not too convenient.

Hi ink..no I haven't yet but yoga is something I have wanted to try forever. I have been staying away from the classed till I work my way into a bit more fit. However this week my new goal is to try a different class a week! Yesterday I went with a friend and workout NOT SO GOOD....prob not a good idea to go with someone cause you end up talking instead moving! I mean we had fun but didnt break a sweat! I ate soooo much yesterday too! I mean all foods that are part of my plan but way too many of them....which cant be good. For example i made this low carb (sugar free cheese cake) It's 2 carbs a piece but I manage to have 3 pieces yesterday!!!!! I just really over did it even with Low carb foods! I got on scale this morning and NOTHING! I know it doesnt happen over night but I like to see that dam scale move!! Anyway...although sunday and I have been to gym everyday still going today! till tomorrow!
:confused3

OMG!!!!!!!!! the scale is not moving! at all......I am trying to be patient but nothing is happening! its driving me bananas! I have workout everyday for 7 straight days and have stuck to my low carb.....starting to think this way of eating is just NOT working for me!! gonna give it a few more days if I dont see results gonna switch to low fat which i absolutely HATEEEEEE!!
:scared1::scared1:

Better for the scale not to move at all than in an upward direction! I know what you mean tho' as I am at a point where the weight loss is very, very slow. I'm trying to focus more on the muscle that I can see I'm building (Wii Sports Active loves to work out the arms and I can actually see some muscle there now). Think of it as building overall health with your eating habits instead of just losing the pounds.

Thanks ink! After that post I still got up and went (to the gym) and was happy to see indeed I did lose 2 pounds (on their scale) then came home and saw the same on mine! I kept in mind that 2 pounds a week is healthy, I was just expecting the good ole 5-8 pounds that we shed quickly when we jumpstart something, I guess waterweight! either case I was happy that something came off! I definitely feel better and I actually feel lighter so that will keep me going im sure. I also have a pair of jeans hanging over my door (that do not fit me at the moment) that are incentive for me. I try them on everyday! lol tha helped me last time. Yesterday I stayed under my 30 carbs and as I mentioned I did go to the gym although dont feel like I got the best workout ( went with a friend).
I will be going later today and tomorrow we are gonna take a step class. On friday, we decided to do the gym orientation cause we both kinda felt like we may be some of the machines wrong and of course want to know what would impact us best. I gotta say, today will be my 9th straight day at gym! I have never done that before! NOT EVEN at home with the TM or a dvd workout. I am shooting for 28 straight days as jbm mentioned earlier in this thread. till tomorrow.
:rolleyes1

OMG! havent been on in days! I havent fell off the wagon just not on line. I also havent lost any weight either! But, I have continued with the gym! I also decided to give up the lowcarb....it is clearly not working and try weight watchers again! I really cant stand counting points but something has got to give. I have teadered between 188 and 183 and its driving me bananas! So I begin monday! last night I took some time to look at old journals to see what I was eating back last year...I also looked thru the book carefully to see how many points my fave foods were. I will probably do a lil shopping today and stockup and WW friendly stuff! Anyway, off to the gym! till tomorrow.
:rolleyes1

Woke up to great news on the scale! 181.4! so almost 7 pounds since I started...not bad...seems like the scale did not want to move but then just jumped down! So happy that it got me moving my a$$ at the gym. Did cardio and legs today! Tomorrow I will be doing my first yoga class! Super excited about that! So far the weight watchers is going good! Went food shopping and Im stocked with low cal food! Tonight, I plan on doing my WATP dvd! just a lil extra cardio! till tomorrow.
R:rotfl:

7 pounds...woo hoo!

WATP sounds like a good plan. I haven't done mine in a while so I'm going to have to do one this weekend on an off day from my Sports Active.

thanks ink! And this morning! another pound!! down to 180.4! So excited again the scale which I am always being told to ignore actually gives me incentive..I cant wait to go to the gym today! I am gonna do my first yoga class...looking forward to it but actually thinking I wont burn anythng doing it lol....I never did do that extra cardio yesterday I didnt have the time but perhaps today I will being that I will be doing yoga! WW is working good for me. I didnt officially join cause I am paying for gym and I figure I have all the books and rules. I recall last time I started ( I was the same weight) I could use 28 points a day so I went with that rule this time. I have been trying hard to stay at 20 points cause I sometimes noche and I dont tend to measure so i figure if I leave 8 points for era I should be alright. I found myself though yesterday pushing those points! Late night watching TV think by that time I use like 26 points! That is my down fall when I do start losing....that mentality that I can afford to eat a lil extra! Anyway till tomorrow!
