My mom is having part of her colon removed on Wednesday, and I would appreciate it if you could keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

And, if possible, if someone who has had the same surgery, or knows someone who had, could you please tell me what we should expect. They doctors do not know if they will be able to use a scope, or if they will have to make an incision. If they do the scope, it will be a much shorter recovery period. But she had a hysterectomey a few years back, and if she has too much scar tissue from that they will have to make an incision.

How bad a recovery will she most likely have?:confused3 Mom is 66, so while not old as the hills, she is not a spring chicken. Plus she has smokes sense the age of 17, so the doctors say that could have an effect too.

Thank you for thinking of her!

I had this surgery in the summer of 2006! I had developed a severe infection in my colon which ended up perforating it and turned into peritonitis. When I was admitted to the hospital, they tried an intensive course of antibiotics for two weeks, but it just was not going to do the trick.

Before surgery, which was a full incision, they marked me for a colostomy. The surgeon had no idea prior to getting in there and taking a look, if he would be able to resect my colon or not. I awoke after surgery asking if they did it, and felt relieved that he was able to resect, so no colostomy. They ended up taking 1/3 of my colon, an ovary and a tube all of which were enmeshed in the infection site.

I ended up 6 weeks in the hospital but after recuperation was able to return to work and feel much better now. I need to watch my diet and head to the doctor at the first sign of infection which we quelled twice now with antibiotics at home. I think I may always be susceptible, but know the symptoms quite well now.

I will keep your mom in my prayers and hope she has an excellent surgeon, like I had.

I had my ascending colon, cecum and part of the transverse removed because of severe bleeding 8 yrs ago. Recovery wasn't too bad for me but I still tend to have diarrhea most of the time. Karen

You did not say it was cancerous so I am going with that.. I would assume the recovery would be as Carol said, depending on how healthy she went into the surgery also determines the recovery. Any surgery can be a tough recovery, sometimes a lot has to do with the amount of anesthesia as well, it takes so long for that to leave the body. Also, there will be pain afterwards and how long she stays on pain pills sometimes also determine how quick she recovers....at least that is what it was like with my husband after his whipple procedure, which is a huge surgery. Hopefully, she will come through with flying colors, have a great surgery and a good recovery.

Keeping her in my thoughts....
