Colleges

I either want to go to University of Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Penn, Darthmouth, or Boston University.
And major in Medicine or Law.

It all depends what happens between now and then.

See, that's another problem that I face. I will not allow myself and my mother to go into THAT much debt. ALL of those schools except Kent State, has tuitons above the annual earnings that come into this home. Even with scholarships, that's steap.

Actually, all of the colleges I listed are on that list simply because I will requre a good financial aid package. All of those schools meet an average of 80% of all financial need of their students. Princeton fills 100% of their student's financial need. Granted, they need to review your situation and deem you needy, but with 251 people recieving financial aid at Princeton currently, all of them have their need filled 100%.

Don't rely totally on scholarships, either. Grants work the same way, as do financial need packages.

HOLY MOTHER EdUCATION COSTS ALOT IN AMERICA!!! :scared1:

I'm starting University next week (yikes!!!) I'm going to the University of Toronto, Majoring in Theatre Studies, Minoring in English & French Linguistics.
It's costing me about $5,000/year in courses.
I'm living at home though, so that does save alot of money. but $30,000/year that is MADNESS! how do they expect you to come up with that sort of money!
It is commonplace for people to go on to university here, but I think if it cost that much it would be rare for people to go!!

Anyways, I applied at 2 other universities, York & Ryerson.

I had to do auditions for all of them to be in the drama programme, which was REALLY stressful! haha

I REALLY don't know much about the requirments for getting into University in the states, but I'm very curious about it...can anyone fill me in?

It's the reason I'm not going to college. I'd rather start at the very bottom and work my way up in the work force than put myself in tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt that'll take years and years and years to pay back.

Plus I can get into broadcasting school for a helluva lot less than college, and focus on EXACTLY what I want to learn, rather than having a bunch of classes I don't need.

I had been thinking of studying some form of Media at Ryerson University.
Or possibly University of Ottawa, just because it seems to be a friendly place, and I partially know my way around..

I have a personal adviser at school for collegiate guidance.

I'm looking at UT in knoxville with a minor in French and a Major in law.

College prep is very hard in the US, or at least, confusing. Most colleges, but not all requre an SAT or ACT score and they scrutinize your high school grades, your extracurricular activities like sports and clubs, you need references, and write essays. Some colleges like the Ivy League (supposedly the most elite colleges in the US) have really high expectations. Take Harvard for example, best known for its law school. Every year tens of thousands of students apply, but they accept 9% of their applicants. They cost a lot to attend, but they are also the wealthies college in the US (they're worth $34.9 billion) so they can fufill any sort of financial need a student has. Other colleges are smaller and less picky and less pricy. The most costly schools in the country are probably the Ivy League schools (Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Penn, Brown, Cornell, and Columbia). Colleges are also classified by their sports division- NCAA Divisions I, II, and III. This decides how much money they are allowed to give out in athletic scholarships. Division I is allowed the most, then Division II, and Division III can't give out any scholarships based solely on athletics. Ivy League Schools are Division I, but don't give out any scholarships for athletics. These schools are often connected with being "socially elite", almost like attending Oxford or Cambridge, both world recognized. Other schools like state schools are local and often give a discounted tuition price to a student living in-state. Some schools over discounted tuition based on the area of study.

The application process is long and tiring, too. I've already been prepping hard. I've taken the PSAT (and I outscored an average of 90% of all 10th graders in the US that took it), I'll be taking it again this year as well as a minimum of three SAT Subject Tests and the AP US History Exam. My senior year (next year, 08-09) I have to take the SAT. Some take the ACT instead of the SAT.

What's cool is one of my first pick schools is the Universite de Montreal. I'd only pay about $12,000 a year to study there because I'd have a major in French.

But meh, sorry for the long post. I think I rambled a bit and I probably didn't explain anything, sorry.

That is a crazy-long process.

Here is a brief synopsis of what I had to go through.

When you're in grade 12, and have expressed interest in going to University, you are given a code # & password to set up an account with OUAC (ontario university application centre) it is ALL done online. You Select what Universities you want to apply for and the programme you want to apply for. (It's free for up to 4 universities, after 4 I think it's a $40 charge/application)
Anyways, once you've applied you receive letters from the universities acknowledging your application and giving you further instructions on what to do.
Some programmes are just based on marks so you don't have to do anything else.
I was going for the drama programmes so I had alot to do.
I had to get 2 references, make a resumé, have 2 auditions pieces memorized, book auditions, do interviews, write essays.
A VERY long/difficult process.
My boyfriend, on the other hand, just had to apply, and he was admitted/rejected based on marks only!!

As for payment, post-seconadry schooling seems to be MUCH cheaper here. My whole year is only costing me about $6,000 in total (courses, books, meal plan, parking pass etc)
We have scholarships based on academics, not so much athletics. You can apply for bursaries and OSAP (not entirely sure what that stands for) but it's like an interest-free loan.

ALSO, Axel. I'm pretty sure that if you are an international student coming to Canada, it will be cheaper for you. Another university that you might be interested in Quebec is Concordia university or McGill, they are both VERY well-established and ranked pretty high in Canada. :goodvibes

GOOD LUCK to EVERYONE on their college/university apps!

my 7thgrade teacher asked all of us our colleges and i said i have no idea and se said well go to hastra its big on basketball so im guessing hastra

Do you mean Hofstra? HU also has a very good journalism program if that's something that you're at all interested in that type of thing.

I was thinking the same thing. Also I went to Hofstra this year and the Campus is so nice. I am a huge Jets fan and we went there for their training camp.

Ditto to the bolded. Us DISers are up there on that intellectual scale. :thumbsup2

Anyway, I have no intention of taking the PSATs again. I plan on taking the SATs this year and perhaps senior year to combine them to get the best possible score. It just seems to make more sense than taking the PSATs again.

You Select what Universities you want to apply for and the programme you want to apply for. (It's free for up to 4 universities, after 4 I think it's a $40 charge/application)

That's VERY nice! Here, the fee varies depending on where you apply. I'd say that it averages about $50 per school.

Catholic highschools around here are $7,000 per child attending. :scared1:

(First, I'd like to point out that I am now a college student, and I know that I technically belong on the college board, but I think that I can offer some advice.)

I don't know much about universities outside of Ohio, but I highly recommend trying my college: Miami University: Oxford Campus in Oxford, Ohio. They have a lot of great programs here and a fantastic atmosphere. It is also conveniently located close to many great classic resturaunts that you will quickly become addicted to if you come here.

On the other hand, I discourage Kent State. Their music program and overall package never drew me in. Also, I've heard some pretty bad things about other programs as well as their academic competitiveness. There is a saying about them: "Kent read, Kent write State." Say it out loud, and you'll get it.

I go to Gettysburg College, currently a sophomore History major and Theatre Arts minor.

I only applied to Gettysburg. It was my first choice, by far, so I decided to apply Early Decision. I got accepted and knew where I was going by December of my senior year.
I did look at other schools though... Franklin & Marshall was my second choice, and Loyola:Baltimore, Muhlenberg, and William & Mary were my other choices.

Axel, I don't know much about your list of colleges... I've been to Ursinus, and the campus looks really nice.
But I warn you about Princeton... They are EXTREMELY hard to get into to. My friend had an 800 on the Math SAT and got 5s on all of his AP exams, and got flat out rejected from Princeton. I'm not discouraging you or saying you won't get in, but just know it is very tough.

Anywho, talking about tuition... Gettysburg is $44,000 and is still increasing. When I was first looking at Gburg my junior year of high school (2004), it was $38,000. A $6,000 increase in 3 years is alot... so that means by the time I am a senior it will be roughly $48,000. And the increase of tuition is happening at the majority of colleges. It sucks. REALLY bad. Especially when they take away most of my finacial aid just because my sister graduated college and we now only have one child paying college tuition instead of two. grrrr. (if you can't tell, I'm a bit bitter toward the finacial aid people...)

My parents are going to pay for my college, and I don't want to make them pay too much. They could afford most colleges, though. The jobs I'm interested in at the moment wouldn't really need a fancy shmancy degree from a school like Harvard.

I want to major in Nursing or Childhood Education. I plan on going to my local university...about 500$ a class, or you can pay it in a big annual chunk which I'm not sure the cost of. It's called UAFS. I will also have a part time job by then that I will work at at night.

I'm trying to be realistic for my future, and I know I'll have to work hard to set myself up. I don't have some huge trust fund coming to me, and really, we're just normal middle-class people. I'll need to start working hard early, to make myself a nice life later.

That is a crazy-long process.

The Ontario system is was so annoying and long for my brother, when he was trying to apply, he almost gave up right there. It really annoyed the hell out of him.
The application process is more expensive than it is here in NB. Most people stay local for university around here.
