College Graduation Gift from Parents?

is the college graduate starting a new job? maybe needing money for a new wardrobe?

don't laugh -- I got new tires for my car for college graduation. And I loved it because I was commuting to a new job.

a Pandora bracelet, if she doesn't have one. I think that is a really neat thing and you could start her off with a graduation charm and then she can add to it w/memories that will be occuring in her life, ie: wedding, kids, vacation, etc....

If finances allow for something very nice but not over-the-top extravagant: I'd give her a nice piece of jewelry as a keepsake of the occasion, and on a very practical note I'd also give her a $1000 IRA and a book on beginning to save for retirement from an early age.

I just want to say that retirement fund money has to be EARNED money.......now she can put in earned money (her first paycheck) and you can give her cash in the amount but it has to be earned money.......

How do they regulate that?

We gave our kids a laptop when they graduated from college(all had desk tops that we bought them for college). DS's were also given something lasting, a mirror from their college, cuff links and the last son received a stained glass lamp. DD was given a small diamond necklace.
When DD got her PHD we bought her a mahogany desk from Stickley. She picked it out, it's gorgeous.
DH and I were fortunate enough to be able to pay for the educations so they are debt.

My folks took me and the rest of our family (aunt/uncle/grandmother/brother) to dinner and they gave me a gift of nice quality pots and pans (Emerilware/all-clad). I was an adult (went back to school after getting out of the Army) and I use the pots and pans daily!

My parents paid for most of my college so I didn't get a gift from them. We did go out to dinner with the grandparents and close family. DH (fiance at the time) were going to Disney that summer and I think my parents may have given me money towards my plane ticket, but that was it. I didn't really expect anything other than a token gift since they had paid big $$$ for my education. That was my present!

We had the same situation 2 years ago with ds1 from college and ds2 from high school within a month of each other. Then their was their cousin who also graduated from college too. We took ds and his girlfriend to dinner after graduation. We also paid for college so I don't think he expected much. We also had a trip planned to DW in Aug so they knew that was a big part of their present. ALSo throw in a 30th wedding anniversary and it was a big year.
