My 18 year old niece just started her freshman year at college and it is her first time away from home. I would like to send her a care package and would love suggestions on what to put in it. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

My DS doesn't go off to college until next year but a friend's daughter went two years ago. Here is what I sent as a care package. Pictures from our last party together, her favorite cookies, gift certificates to Dunkin Donuts, Baskin Robbins, and movie passes. Her mother sent her a toiletry basket approximately one month after she got to school. It included all of the personal items, her favorite salon shampoo, etc. Good luck. Annmarie

I always liked the care packages that had money in them:D As a student supporting herself and paying for college even ten dollars was enough to make me smile.

Gift certificates to grocery stores or Wal-mart. Maybe some energy snack bars too. Movie passes are always a good idea too or maybe a gift card at a movie rental place. I would definately do the grocery route. One can only eat so many ramen noodles!!!

Some cash is the #l item for a college student. Fast food gift certifs, stamps, long distance phone card, snacks, and for girls Bath and Body stuff.

herc.

My neices and nephews like when I include gas cards to Mobil( or whatever gas station your neice is near). I include pistachio nuts wrapped up fancy, favorite baked goodies, and pictures of the last time she visited. I sent a close up of her dog(who was at my house on New Years. I put a party hat on him and a lay around his neck...she laughed at this one)!
Have Fun

When I was off in college I loved recieving a care package. Money, Gift Card to Walmart or other grocery type store, books, stamps, and food where always the best things I could get. I also like recieving cards and letters with all the news of what was happening at home.

Good suggestions so far!!!!

My DS is in his fourth year up at MSU and he always enjoys a gift card to the local grocery store, a gift card to a local bookstore, etc. I also found out that the campus bakery has a website and I can order a BIG cookie, brownie, etc and have it delivered to his room. That is always a big hit!!!!

My son liked to receive money (always), phone cards, gift certificates for gasoline (see that money comment), cans of nuts, new underwear and socks (I think it was this aversion to doing laundry), one use cameras and money.

OH, did I mention money? He really liked getting cash ;)

What we did for DS (recently graduated from UMich, but I love him anyway [Go State!])

Money, Snacks, stuff he needs but forgets to buy (toiletries, napkins, etc), money, current magazines, money; oh, and anything homemade: cookies, brownies, rice krispie treats.

Note from both he and I (his DDad): UMich used to offer 'care packages' that you paid for but they assembled and delivered - usually a student org. fundraiser. We tried them his freshman year, and they were crap. Snacks were a few bite-size candies, saltine crackers. A couple of drink boxes and a little box of laundry soap -> $25-30. Do it yourself; it'll be better and they'll appreciate it more.

I LOVED getting stuff from home, whether it was sent by mail or delivered in person. Food is always good - snack food, homemade goodies, microwaveable food so you don't have to go to the cafeteria. DM made these killer caramel bars one time and instantly became my floor's favorite parent. Everyone wanted the recipe.

And money, of course, is always good, since you're always short of it in college. I like the idea of gift cards for Target/Walmart and the grocery store too.
