DS is a HS junior, so we are beginning this process now. Here's what we've learned so far:
- write from the heart! college admissions officers can spot contrived essays
- don't reiterate your extra curricular activities - they are listed elsewhere on the app.
- This is the only opportunity that you have to let your personality be seen so use it wisely!
- Have lots of people read your rough and final drafts - parents, relatives, HS English teacher, guidance counselor, etc. Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
Gather questions from the college you're applying to and see which is the best fit for you. Some sample questions: Write about a person who has had a significant influence on you. What are your personal goals upon completion of college? Write an essay that conveys a sense of who you are. Explain a time when you experienced a custom that was new to you. Topic of your choice.
DS has been studying martial arts for 12 years and will test for his 3rd degree black belt soon. He will probably try to center his essay around this - leadership skills, respect/influence of his instructor, teaching special needs children and adults, etc. Yes, this will appear on his ECs but he can go in-depth in his essay.
Try the website
www.collegeconfidential.com - discussion forum. A lot of people on this site are applying to Ivies and other top-rated colleges, but you can still get some good info here. High school guidance counselors may also have sample essays to look at also.
Good luck!!
