Are the coffee makers in the moderate rooms clean? I'm a bit of a germophobe and the idea of tons of strangers using the coffee maker and it not being cleaned well creeps me out.

It all depends on your mousekeeper as to how clean it is before you arrive. When we used to make coffee, I would bring a little 1 ounce bottle of vinegar and flush it through the cycle once and then with clear water once before using it. I haven't paid attention to the coffee pots lately because we can't stand the coffee and I go to the food court to get our coffee which, at least at the CSR, is much better than the coffee in the room.
germaphobe here....I plan to bring my some saniwipes w/ me...you can sterilize your pot and then rinse well w/ hot water.. Clean out inside of dresser drawers and wipe down anything that doesn't look clean, and you can bet I'll be pulling back sheets and looking for bedbugs, though I doubt there are any at Disney.
I would have to wash the coffee maker out before I would use it. A couple of years ago I read how some people (mostly flight attendants) were using the coffee maker to wash their underwear and hose because the water would get really hot. Seems a little far fetched to me but I would still take some Dawn with me to wash the carafe. We don't use the glasses anymore either since I read they don't get washed, just sprayed with a cleaner then wiped out. I take small disposable plastic cups. I don't believe everything I read, but it does make me think.

Yeah, I've heard that, too, about flight attendants and pantyhose. However, my main reason for not using coffee makers in hotel rooms is because I've also heard/seen (on 20/20, etc. specials) that a lot of times housekeeping will just use the same rag that they wiped your counter or toilet down with to wipe out your coffee pot. I hate to think about it, but I can totally see that happening. So, even if you clean it when you get there, it's the in-between cleanings that worry me.
We just got back from a stay at a Residence Inn in Portland, OR. It was a 2 bedroom so it had a small kitchen and dishwasher. The housekeeper ran the whole dishwasher everyday just for that coffee pot. I took all of the dishes and glasses and ran them thru when we got there to be sure they were clean. Tough to know in a regular hotel situation.
My first year at WDW we stayed at CSR and when I went to use the coffee maker it had old coffee grounds in it and it was moldy, needless to say I never got to make coffee in WDW. This coming year we will be staying DVC and I will have a dishwasher so maybe I will try again.

At the WL the inside of the coffemaker was caked in white residue, probably a result of that nasty sulphurous water. We opted to skip the coffeemaker altogether and use refillable mugs for coffee from the food court. On another coffee note, it is difficult to find a decent cup in DW. There are a few kiosks, etc. and I drank more espresso and cappucino than usual just to get my caffein fix.

I know it's my own fault for reading this right after lunch, but I think I'm going to be sick now....... That's is seriously disgusting !!! And here I was, all excited to bring my favorite Twinnings tea with me.....now, not so sure. I can tell you this, I'll be cleaning the heck out of that coffee pot before I drink out of it !!
