Code usage on an existing reservation

Hello All,
Big Disney fan here, and an avid reader of this board!
I have a quick question...in the past, when we have booked a Disney hotel, we usually wait for the code to come out and then call to book the reservation using the code and getting the low rate.

My sister in law is planning to make a reservation at Port Orleans for Sept 1 - 6 very soon (using the Magic Your Way option, this comes to $1610.00 for 2 adults/2 kids and park hopper tickets).

If a code comes out sometime later, can she call and use the code to change the rate on her existing reservation? Or would she have to cancel that one and book a new one using the code?

As an aside, I calulated how much it would cost for just the room and the park tickets separately and it came to less than 1610...is the Magic Your Way stuff supposed to save you money...doesn't seem to be the case?

Did the $1610 include the dining package?

You can not get the dining add on for room only ressies using a discount code. Most "packages", Disney or not. rarely save a lot of money (if any), but are offered as a convenience to guests. If you will be paying full rack rate for your room, the Dining Package may save some $$$, otherwise, the difference between the discount room rate and full price rack rate is liable to make the dining package more expensive than it is worth.

If you find it is cheaper to book the room and tickets separately, by all means, do that.

***Currently AAA members can get a disocunt on the MYW with Dining packages, but they must book through an AAA travel rep.

We just booked a DW vacation to stay at the Wilderness Lodge in June 2005 through Disney. We booked a room only and will pay for our Park Hopper tickets sometime before we arrive (to get them cheaper). I first had them quote me a Magic Your Way room and tickets for 4 nights. I then had them quote me just room price for 4 nights and park hopper tickets seperately. It was a tad bit cheaper seperately! I asked the reservationist, "What's the advantage of the Magic Your Way package if buying the room and tickets seperately is a little cheaper or the same cost?" She said, that the "Magic Your Way" packages only help you out when you start to stay 6+ days. That's where the saving kick in. If you are only staying 4 or 5 days, you won't see much if any difference at all. If you are staying a shorter time, booking the room seperately (instead of a package) has it's adavantages in that they only charge one nights stay plus tax up front on your credit card and you can cancel you reservation up to 5 days before arrival date and get all of your money back. If you buy the packages, they require a large portion up front and then the remaining balance 45 days before your arrival. You also have to cancel somewhere between 30-45 days (check to make sure which) before your arrival with a package to get all of your money back or you will be charged fees, etc.

Basically, if you are going to stay a long time 6+ days, the packages really do start to save you (basically with park ticket prices); however, if you are staying 3-5 days, I believe setting up the room seperately is cheaper and leaves you much more options in case anything arises.

P.S. The reservationist said, "If you get any discount codes later, just call back in with your reservation number and tell the agent that you have a discout code you need applied to an existing reservation." She said they do this all the time.
