I am going to rent a car for one day and take my kids from WDW by myself to Cocoa Beach. We live in the midwest in a small town and literally have no traffic on the daily. So needless to say, I am nervous about the drive. I have a few, probably silly questions for those who have done the drive. How much money should I have for tolls? Do they only take cash? Is there an "easy" way to get there? Should I spend the extra money for gps in the rental car to help get us there correctly? We are going on a Monday, around lunch time. Are there any times to plan around on the way back to avoid rush hour traffic? Please help calm my mind. My kids have never seen the ocean and are thrilled! I am nervous though!

Its been a couple of years since we went to Cocoa Beach (our last two beach days have been spent at Daytona), but the drive is super easy (basically a straight shot right along the Beachline Expressway). If I remember correctly, tolls were about $5 each way (broken down into several smaller increments) so I would take $10 for the return trip. We parked for free at Lori Wilson Park, which has change rooms and restrooms right off the parking lot and a nice walkway to the beach.

Plan to visit Ron Jon's Surf Shop if you are looking for souvenirs. Its HUGE and has some great photo ops too.

I actually found a "traffic" shot from our drive there....

Its a great beach :thumbsup2 .

We've been travelling to the Orlando area for nearly 30 years (probably 15 trips in that span) and have been to Cocoa, Daytona, New Smyrna and a few others on the Atlantic side as well as Clearwater on the Gulf side. My preference has always been New Smyrna as it tends to get a little less traffic than Cocoa and Daytona, and lets you drive on the beach (less distance hauling gear). The one down side is the beach traffic but it isn't an annoyance to relaxing because the constant wind and waves drowns out any noise.

That said, Cocoa beach is wonderful and Ron John's will have anything you could want or need as souvenirs, something New Smyrna has less readily available. It's also 10-15 minutes closer. You don't mention time of year, but if it's the 2 weeks from now that your signature suggests, know that water temperatures may be a bit chillier than you'd expect. Cocoa Beach water temps are at their lowest of the year on average today (2/10) averaging 68 to 73F (65F currently). This is 15 to 20F cooler than late July highs.

If you're renting a car, you may consider just utilizing the Sunpass to handle tolls. With most rentals, a small fee covers the days you use it and bills you for the actual cost of the tolls via your credit card. That way you need not worry about getting into the correct lanes at toll boths, you simply whiz by and the license plate is read and the toll billed back to you via the rental agency.

If you have a smart phone, no need to do the GPS. If you trust your oldest (and you're patient enough), let them help you navigate by holding the phone and relaying directions. If not, take your time and enjoy what you find if you make a wrong turn. The phone will get you back no problem. If you don't use a smartphone, I would get a GPS for the car as, although things are well marked, you may get turned around. Just remember the big water is east :-). Living next to Lake Michigan myself, this is the first piece of navigational advice we learned.

Gina-Gina-Bo-Bina's traffic shot is spot on unless you are really unlucky. As you get closer to the beach, traffic will pick-up a little. Just remember that most everyone is a tourist so not always exactly sure of where to go. Better to get to the beach a little late than miss it because of an accident. Unlike Disney, you get to proceed at your pace, so don't feel like you're on a deadline and you'll be fine (this is a do as I say not as I do). As far as the return trip, traffic is similar until you get back near Orlando which will be a bit hectic from 4:30 to 6:00. If it's too much for you, stop for dinner and let things calm down, you'll likely need the nourishment after a day at the beach.

Ok, first of you have totally reassured me. Thank you x 1000 right now!! I was picturing awful, crazy traffic. Seriously was almost in tears over it. I love, LOVE the photos and thank you so much for your advice! :)

This is EXCELLENT advice, thank you! We definitely will check out Ron John's. I need to be more excited about this than so fearful! :)

This thread was great for me, too. Gina, thank you! We have 2 nights in March that we'll actually be staying in Cocoa Beach.

I know that 528 is not the main line over to/from Daytona, but I noticed that coming up are some Daytona Speedway events. Do the experts feel that 528 gets stopped up by people trying to avoid that traffic?

Regardless OP, 528 is kind of a straight shot. Traffic might make it slow, but it's not going to be *difficult* IMO.

I personally bring a roll of quarters and ten ones, keep those handy, and just do the cash lanes. So easy. Just have your navigator* look for the toll areas (IMO there are good signs).

*Looks like you have some teens. Have them help you.

Perfect, thank you!! :) I will have to make my oldest daughter break away from taking selfies for awhile to help me out. ;)

Take the advice given & Gina's Photos are really good ( Well Done )

Another Tip............... As you Near Cocoa Beach ...... Watch out for the Turn OFF ..... Right for Port Canaveral.

The Cruise Ships may be in port & you can have a close look at them by driving into the port area & have a look ( Be Brave ).

I would start a bit earlier in the day ...... it is an hour & a half drive each way . Tolls take Cash .

There is another place to see & have a swim etc but it has a Day Parking Fee.

The Turn Left for it is on a Slow Sharpe right Curve as you enter Cocoa Beach ( Name of Park is ???? )

...........................................................

WARNING WARNING The Atlantic Ocean is Dangerous & has Waves ........ As your children have Never seen the Ocean

be careful ........ Stay near the edge ...... There WILL BE tow out from the waves.....

Enjoy the excitement of the Ocean and the feel of the sand on your toes

But just be careful.

We live beside the Atlantic in Cork in Ireland so we have respect for its power .

.......................

Have a great vacation

I'd go earlier if possible for more time on the beach and to be able to skip rush hour traffic back into Orlando area.

Depending on where you are staying in Orlando, would pick up the Greenway Rt 417 and then merge onto the beachline.

Thank you both, very much!! I'm getting excited. Just nervous about the actual drive part.
