Coast Guard Medevacs 7 Year Old from Castaway Cay

Interesting that they took the patient to a Miami hospital instead of a closer one in Nassau

Friends of ours are on the Wish this weekend and saw the Media vac. Prayers and good wishes to this child for a speedy recovery!

It was a Miami based Coast Guard Helicopter according to the tweet.

How sad and scary for that family. I hope all went well.

The hospital in Nassau is awful. I have known 2 people on separate occasions that had terrible experiences. Both were staying at Atlantis and both had to pay upfront even for an emergency procedure. Both had major infections when they got back to the states. They do not like American tourists.

Omg this makes me feel so much more reassured in case something wrong happens!! How long is the flight from castaway to Miami?

Child + abdominal pain = suspected appendicitis. Especially as he was walking upright.

It is a serious condition that needs immediate attention.

I went from doctors office to OR table in under 2 hours, as an adult. There was no upright walking by that point.

Definitely hope and suspect he got appropriate treatment.

But also - if US Coast Guard is available for transport, wouldn’t they usually take person to US hospital? Otherwise, if the Coast Guard of other country arrived, then they would go to hospital if that country?

Thankfully he walked to the helicopter. I agree with @auntlynne possible appendicitis. My husband waited for 8 hours in an ER hallway for his surgery-I thought I was going to lose him that day. No upright walking at that point either. And because it ruptured, he got to spend extra days in the hospital. Glad they took him to the states to be treated. Best wishes to the family and little guy. Hope he will be well and kicking soon!

Especially if it is also in the city the Coast Guard crew is from.

I would hope that no matter what country the helicopter was from they would take the patent to the nearest, equipped facility no matter what country.

This is what I wondered about: Castaway Cay is in The Bahamas. DCL is flagged in the Bahamas. There are hospitals located on Nassau, which is definitely closer to CC than Miami is.

How does the USCG become involved? Were they the second call made for help or does any possible Bahamian air lift get bypassed?

I would rather go to a US hospital, but wonder if the guests get any say in the choice?

If the Coast Guard is available they will come to Castaway Cay. They have the range to get there and back to Miami. Also depending on weather conditions.
What other helicopter Medivacs are available? I ask because I sure am not aware of any, US Coast Guard is the only option.
