CNN subtitled a Cajun

I thought that this thread was going to be about (Kentucky Derby winning jockey) Calvin Burrell. I lived in Louisiana for four years, and I still can't understand Calvin when he gets excited! (Bless his heart!)

I grew up in the heart of Acadiana , right outside of Lafayette. My DH dies laughing when I get excited and the little coonass girl comes out .

I saw the gentlemen on Cnn, I understood him perfectly ;).

He accent wasn't quite as thick as some around here.

His was more of a Plaquemines Parish accent than true cajun. Southwest Louisiana area is much different accent and harder to understand.

You're right. It's more of a Yat accent. Kind of sounds Brooklynese.

That is right J ! There is Yat and then there is cajun LOL.

I'm not sure that the folks outside of Louisiana will understand LOL, but big difference!

Where y'at dawlin????? ; )

I shared a train car (2 seats facing each other) for about an hour outside of London many years ago.

It took me about halfway through the trip to figure out what language the guys (inches away from me) were speaking.

It was Cockney English. I really had no idea what they were saying. As I said it took me at least 30 minutes to figure out that the conversation was in english.

The same thing happened to me in WDW! I was a teenager and watching the fireworks, and there were two guys around my age standing next to me. I couldn't tell what country they were from. One of them said "hello" to me, and I asked them what language they had been speaking. I was so embarrassed with they said "English!" Luckily, we all laughed and I ended up talking to them throughout the show.

I spent my Louisiana time in the Lafayette/Youngsville/New Iberia area. I also worked at a casino in Charenton. Is any of that considered part of the Southwest area? I know it seemed that the farther outside of Lafayette I got, the thicker the accents got.

That whole area is Acadiana. The original settlers , the Acadians who were exiled from Nova Scotia settled in St. Martinville area, which is right outside of New Iberia. That area is southwest Louisiana.

Heading towards Charenton would be more southeast, but yes lol they talk cajuns there too. You don't get the Yat accent until you hit Nola area and the further south, the worse it gets .

Now you've got me curious about the Yat accent. I don't think I know what it sounds like!

:lmao:My husband had an uncle that talked like Farmer Fran from Waterboy. :rotfl:

Rest in peace Uncle Willie. You are missed.
