I personally take offense when the servers take time out of your meals to inform you of the "excellent service" they have provided and are very clearly implying that they deserve a tip commensurate with "excellent" service. Tipping should be a hands-off exercise. I feel that DCL makes too much out of it as do the servers (at least the ones we've had this past cruise). You are paying a premium price for a DCL cruise and you expect to get a premium level of service for that price. If you get less than a premium level of service or even an average level of service, why would anyone expect to get a premium tip? If anything, in our case, it went a long way to turning us off as opposed to making us jump to throw money at them. . [/B]
I had the hard sell which turned me off by my servers as well, however, I blame this on DCL not the server wanting tips. It seemed to me that there is a great deal of pressure on the servers to get the "excellent" rating on the survey, (which I believe has nothing to do with tips, the server constantly referred to excellent on the survey, no mention of tips at all!). I got the impression that their jobs depended on their excellent rating. Our server seemed to have recently been promoted to server, and I got the impression that his staying a server depended on guests marking him as excellent. This I blame on the system put in place by DCL not on the poor server who worked hard for a week!
While I did not like the hard sell for the survey, I didn't let it affect my tip at all. I personally think that they do an excellent job, and feel if I am fortunate enough to take such a wonderful vacation, I can pay the extra to thank my servers and room steward by paying them a nice tip.
