Clueless AP holder trying to book 2006

When I went to WDW last March as an AP holder I was able to book a room last minute the "old" way. Now I'm looking to book for this January and I've logged on here and see things have changed. I checked the Passholder site already and am getting a great rate, especially on ASMo but it looks like moderates aren't bad either. I'm catching on to the fact that booking conditions are a bit different this time around though and the last minute booking is a thing of the past.
Here's my question....should I be holding out for a Room Only Code like last year? Are the folks waiting for those here not AP holders? And if the BRP and room only code are two different things, will BRP always beat a room only code? Or vice versa?
Hope it's not too confusing to get an answer.
Thanks.

If you are going in Jan. you can't book within 60 days of today. That would mean the trip would have to be later than Jan. 11 (If I added right). The way things have been going the BRP will probably be your best bet. The cancellation policy is not as flexible. If you know the exact dates and they are firm, I would read the BRP restrictions and book if they are OK with you.

I think BRP is going to be the best thing going right now, especially ESPECIALLY if you are going after MLK weekend. Those rates are quite nice. I've read elsewhere that Orlando will be awash with conventioners in January, so we may not see any room only deals this year.
