The Laundry thread got me thinking...

Has anyone done cloth diapers at WDW?

We're planning on it, our hotel has laundry facilities so that we can wash mid-trip...but I was just curious as to whether anyone else has successfully done so?

I haven't although I wanted to. My dh wasn't excited over bringing a suitcase just for the diapers. We have done them on weekend trips.

Gotcha!

We're lucky, we're within driving distance (it'll be about 9 hours). And since we only have 1 DD, it's less dipes. Plus, DH is all about the Fuzzi Bunz, so they're pretty compact for packing.

This is our first trip with Lyss, though, where we weren't staying with family and had to use coin-op washers/dryers. So I'm a bit nervous!

We didn't try - I didn't want to deal with packing the bulk, or carrying that much extra around the parks. If you take FBs, I'd say to leave your hemp at home since it is so temperamental in different water harnesses (so your home washing routine may spell disaster at WDW). Go with the Wal-Mart microfiber towels or MOE microfiber inserts, or anything non-hemp. They will be more forgiving and will dry faster, and you can just get them super-clean when you get home to your own water and hot water tank!

Though I wonder if prefolds and covers would be more efficient for you, since you can reuse the covers?? Not as easy to change, though, and I personally am a disaster with prefolds...

DH won't even ATTEMPT PFs and covers. He tried them once when I owned my store and needed to try them to be able to talk with customers about them, and he hated them with a passion.

We use mostly MOE inserts. The only hemp is JBs for night and some hemp flats I'm having a WAHM I work with make (flats so that they'll dry much faster). If they get stinky, I'll just boil when I get home!

We just can't go completely without hemp, DD is a super soaker. Even with 2 JBs and 2 MOE inserts, she's soaked through everything by morning.

I have one comment about washing the diapers-most hotel dryers take forever to dry clothes. Bring lots of quarters!

Yeah....

DH & I were talking last night, and he said the same thing. So now, we're vacillating on the CDs.

Our current thought is maybe using 7th Generation disposables and an empty FB as a cover. She's just such a heavy wetter...and I'm afraid she'll be soaking through her shorts CONSTANTLY. :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about these things.

We don't even have our next trip planned, but I'm already wondering what we'll do about diapers when we go. Ideally, I'd like to stay in a one bedroom villa with a washer/dryer to make washing diapers easier, but staying in a regular room and using disposibles would be cheaper. I have 2 in diapers, so that would be a lot of diapers to haul around in the parks.

Washing in a laundromat could get really expensive and time consuming. You'd have to pay for an extra cycle for both the pre-rinse and the extra rinse at the end. That's 3 whole cycles. And then you might need several cycles in the dryer.

For FBs, I'd probably use CPFs as inserts. They're easy to wash and dry so quickly. Even if they didn't get all the way dry in the dryer, you could lay them out in the room. They won't get moldy inside if they're not dried in high heat like hemp.

Have you tried CPFs in a bumkins cover? There is a little pocket to hold the prefold in place. My dh prefers AIOs, but he will change the bumkins with little complaining. (You should have heard him grumble about changing fitteds with wool covers  )

DH does the laundry on trips, and he said it usually takes 2-3 dryer cycles to get everything dry. That could be very time consuming for you.

We tried 7th generation, and DD1 wet right through them. So, gulp, we went with Pampers Cruisers, which will hold a gallon of liquid I think! We didn't have any problem with the gel leaking (which totally grosses me out about sposies), and we change them just as frequently as we would in cloth. Tushies diapers are the only kind without the gel, and they were useless.

I forgot to ask, have you gone to the diapering board at MDC? There are lots of mamas there who have cloth diapered on vacation, and maybe they would have some ideas for you.

If you haven't been there, I warn you now, you will be so tempted by all of the great diaper chat! I have spent way too much money because of reading about some great, gotta have diaper!

I'd been pushing to do cd's on vacation since we started about a year ago. DH has always fought me, so I end up just using sposies. Then when we went to DH's parents for a few days I decided that he could bite me, I was bringing my cloth. Well, after a gross washing machine malfuction where MIL's washer didn't wash right and I ended up having to wipe poop out of their dryer with bleach, I'm in no hurry to do cd's on vacation again, lol. We just got cheap-o Target brand diapers (we had went back to sposies at night anyways because we do family bed and neither DH nor I could take the amonia factory the boys were carrying in their pants :rotfl: )

But, I thought I'd share my wash routine because our washer doesn't have a pre-rinse so I've got it down to do all the washing/rinsing using 2 cycles. Put the diryt diapers into the washer and let run until the 1st rinse. Stop washer at rinse and put in detergent. Let wash through to end. Start wash again without soap and let run through to end to rinse. You end up with a pre-rinse, a short wash and 2 rinses that way.

btw, Amanda you mentioned you used to own a store...I think I used to buy from you when you did :)

THe washing issues wouldn't bother me as much as carrying the dirty diapers all over Disney in the heat. Won't they get a little stinky and heavy after a while?

Bird-Mom Literally, any retail product out there, I've tried it. :) My store was pretty big...I still own the site that the new store owner sells on, so I'm a regular with MDC and all that! ;) I've heard that Tushies were useless, which is why I was leaning towards 7th Gen. She used Pampers when she was hospitalized for 8 days, and the stink of those just did me in...I can't do that again.

Kimberly Totally possible! ;) The store's still open, you should come by and say hi! hehe I'm on the site hours each day!

golfgal I'm hoping they wouldn't stink but I dunno...we're definitely planning on a midday break, though, so we could diaper dump then.

We have always used cloth for nighttime only when at WDW. We use paper during the day. It would take a whole day to "wash" dipes at WDW, and that's too much. Fortunately, we drive over, so we can bring one small load of dirty nighttime diapers back home for washing at the end.

For the time we are at WDW, we splurge and buy the softest, plushest disposable dipes available. I figure my child will survive for 4 days in paper...

When I need to use disposables, I find Luvs and Huggies to be MUCH less offensive to the nose than Pampers. Pampers are very heavily perfumed!! Luvs are lightly perfumed, and Huggies aren't very perfumed at all but the trade-off is that Huggies smell like pee when wet! So if you have to go with sposies, maybe give Huggies or Luvs a shot instead of Pampers...

When we do have to use disposibles, I like Publix and CVS store brands. (They use the same diapers.) They're not perfumed like Pampers, and they don't seem to have so much gel. They probably don't hold as much as some other diapers, but those of us who CD probably change diapers often enough that it's not a problem.
