Closing NY airports?

I have heard about NY being under "virtual lockdown" again, now that we have begun strikes against the Taliban. Does anyone know if they are closing the airports? We are (were) supposed to fly out of JFK tomorrow AM! I don't know at this point if we would still go, I am too much in shock to think it out rationally. I actually hope that our flight is cancelled, then the decision is out of our hands. But so far, it is still listed as "confirmed" on Delta's website. If they don't close the airports/cancel our flights, does anyone think they will offer refunds or changes w/out penalty again, in light of the new developments?:(

I don't thnk you can get a refund before the flight is cancelled but you may have a case to choose a free rebook out of Albany, Philadelphia or Hartford if just the NYC airports are closed and after the flights are cancelled. You will have to make your own arrangements to get to these airports and pay to park there.

Just listened to NY Mayor on TV (can't spell his name, so won't try); NY is not in "lockdown" - additional security procedures are being put in place. Call airline well before flight time to verify status of flight.

I also watched Mayor Giuliani on TV, but unfortunately even the "additional security procedures" cannot give us a feeling of security. We cannot jeopardize our two children's safety when we have no idea what type of retaliatory attacks may occur in the next few days. Am I wrong? Is anyone else scheduled to fly out of NYC in the next couple of days?

You have to make your own decisions about this. I would say that NYC is probably no more or less a target for a possible terrorist attack than many other locations in the US.

Speaking for myself, our vacation plans are still on for flying this Friday.

NYC is NOT in a lockdown, and the airports are open.

Also, it is MY PERSONAL OPINION that it is now safer to fly than ever. Not because of the "heightened security procedures", I think that is about as "Disney" as it gets, "delusions about the illusion". No, rather I think that never again will Americans sit calmly and cooperate. I know I won't. And I've already got together a mental list of items I can still carry on which would make extremely effective defensive weapons. Somehow I am quite sure I am not alone in that thinking. I also am feeling secure knowing that more than likely a fellow passenger reading the newspaper looking like a businessman on the way to a sales meeting is actually a Federal Air Marshall packing a Glock or .357 snub nosed handgun under that busines suit.

It is also my opinion that the chances of your kids being killed as they cross the street for the schoolbus are much higher than in the air as a result of a terrorist action.

Absolutely agree with you about the "delusions about the illusions", and that Americans not sitting by quietly again is more of a defense than the so called added security measures.Well put!!!:)

IMHO, we were all sitiing back, thinking, "it can never happen here." Well, it did. If we were more alert before these attacks, and our country was better protected, perhaps something would have happened differently. For example, one report said that one of the hijackers came into the U.S. on a student visa but never enrolled in school! Whose job was it to monitor these things? We should have been "on alert" back then too. However, no one thought it could happen here.

I agree 100% about the security now being a defense...we have to protect ourselves, but we have to have faith that our gov't is taking all necessary precautions to prevent something from happening again. Yes, it probably could happen again, somewhere at some time, but it could just as easily be a crazed employee rather than a terrorist.

I am going to WDW onm 10-27, and I will have a great time. I can't wait! If you start fearing something so much, you will get to the point where you will never leave your house again. I would not do anything that would put my life in jeopardy, i.e. traveling abroad, etc., but we live with the freedom to go wherever we want to go...I will be going to WDW! :)

Just heard on the news that on an American Airlines flight yesterday, 10 passengers jumped another passenger (evidentally mentally unbalanced) that had charged the cockpit door. Just like ducklite said yesterday, Americans are not going to sit and take it anymore!!:)
