Are there any clergy who have exchanged services for trip on cruise?

Hi KIS.

Are there any clergy who have exchanged services for trip on cruise?

Not sure about clergy. I can think of other professions more likely to have a cruise offered for services rendered...

Actually back when I started cruising in the 1970's there were a number of lines that would offer a week long cruise to Catholic priests in exchange for them saying daily mass for the crew and guests.

The one line I know did it was Sitmar cruises who had an Italian staff and Portuguese crew. On our very first cruise with them the priest was at our dinner table. We became good friends with him and he became my "spiritial Father". He has been there for me when I had cancer, performed the Nuptial Mass for DH and I, and where there for me when my Mom died.

I wish Disney would do the same.

Being a chaplain and mommy of a five year old girl, I'd love to help out in exchange for a special time for my daughter. KIS

I could be mistaken, but I think Disney only has clergy on board during religous holidays. A quick call to reservations could probably answer the question.

Good luck,

Julie

Julie,

I called and got a number to call during week office hours to inquire. I believe you are correct about it being only during holiday times that there are clergy assisting.

Typically they only have ordained clergy onboard for Christmas & Easter. They also bring on rabbis for Jewish high holy days. We attended the interfaith service onboard during our non-holiday cruise, and it was conducted by a non-ordained CM who had interest in attending seminary.

It'll be interesting to see if I can combine work with pleasure to help cover costs for my family's vacation in future years.....

We'll see.

Thanks, Dave and others.

You know, now that you mention it...

my DW is an ordained minister in a Protestant denomination. When we cruised, she stopped by Guest Services to let them know she was available if anyone needed a pastor. It never occurred to me that they might want to offer that kind of compensation in exhange for services. Hmmmm...

Hey, KIS, I'm ordained too (Episcopal, with 2 sons) and we are going on our cruise with a Baptist pastor friend and his family. I did hunt around a little after we booked to see if there was any comp work to be done, but I am quite sure there isn't on DCL. Too bad; I'd sign up in an instant! And, I will admit, since I will be on vacation, I wouldn't be inclined to be put "on call" on a volunteer basis; the whole point for me is getting away from work. Kudos to your wife, Dave, for being so generous! Any of you going 3/20-27/04? Friend and I would still love a way to pass this off as a clergy conference :p

In January they offered Sunday Catholic mass at the last minute. There was a priest on board that offered to share mass with anyone interested. They have to say mass daily for themselves, and this gentleman was kind enough to share his mass with us...

Favorite Auntie - I'd love to see if we could get a "vacation" for our priest using the "bartering service" here! He's a wonderful, spiritual man who works so hard and would probably say no to a vacation, but it's worth a try!

Personally, we try to make daily Mass as part of our home schooling curriculum (Seton) and do miss it while on the ship. Yes, we can do the spiritual Communion but we do so enjoy our Mass.
