I think that instead of doing 10 days at Disney we will do the last 3 or 4 nights in Clearwater close to family. I found some pretty good deals which were linked off of the Clearwater Beach website. Is anyone really familiar with the area? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't want to pay something outrageous, about $150/night is my max. From what I have seen on this website so far its pretty doable, but then again I know that people make their places look super nice and they may not always look like that.

Here is where I have been looking.

We've stayed at the Adams Mark Hotel on Clearwater Beach twice before. However, that chain is defunct and I'm not sure what the new name is. It's an older high-rise hotel, but was up-to-date and right on the beach. As I remeber, it had a couple pools, hot tub, etc. Sliding doors in the room opened to allow the air in, but no actual balcony. The rooms we had both had sofas, too. The restaurant was nice and was right in the town of Clearwater Beach, walk up to the pier, etc. Very nice overall. Hope this helps.

Years ago we stayed at the Hilton on Clearwater Beach. Great location. Not sure how it is now though

I did check out both of those suggestions. Adam's Mark is now the Sheraton I believe and the Hilton was ridiculously expensive. I guess I can't expect much more from a beach front resort! I opted to stay in Tampa near family and I am staying at Hyatt Place Busch Gardens...in a King suite for $107 a night. Not bad!

I have stayed at the Hampton in Clearwater about 10 minutes from the beach and it was nice. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express last trip and the maid stole a bunch of our things (clothes) and they had people partying there every night keeping us up until 2am, on both issues management did not care at all and did nothing to resolve either issue. As fas as things to do... The Captain Memo Pirate Cruise was wonderful, much better than the Disney ones, it was fun for kids and adults. Clearwater is wonderful- good choice

Last October we stayed two nights at Trade Winds Island Grand, Clearwater Beach.

Definitely plan on staying there again. And we did not have an ocean view. Although I think next time I might spring for it. We had no complaints for the room we did have. It was a very nice area. Much nicer than I expected.
We noticed some ocean view rooms had just a slider door with a railing. We would have to have one with a true balcony.
The location was great.
We did pay a nightly resort fee. But it was well worth it as it included a lot -- including a two person beach cabana.
I don't mind resort fees if I really get something for them. But I don't want to pay $10 to get a newspaper.
Trade Winds was nothing like that. And it had so much to do, we did not have to go anywhere else. However we did go to Bush Gardens.

Oh -- and they are a Disney "add on" resort and can be booked through Disney if you wish. That's how I found out about them, as I did not know the area at all prior to then either.
