Thanks for all the replies and info - as always!!

We are spending the first week in Orlando and then driving over to Clearwater (you guys did it for me) taking in Busch there and back and we decided to stay 3 nights.

Can anyone recommend a hotel on the beach but near the action at night??

Cheers guys

One of the best hotels and right on the beach is the Sheraton Sand Key Resort.

We stayed at the 'Holiday Inn, Sunspree' but can't say we were overly impressed.
Yes, it was on the beach but we were, initially, put in a room next to the boilers which elevated our room temp (and was extremely noisy) several degrees
Asked to be moved and it was all fine :thumbsup2

However......................I really wished we'd booked in to the 'yellow hotel', right by the Pier, by one of the few Florida roundabouts..............................Not sure of it's name.
Is it the Hilton?

:goodvibes

That is a lovely hotel and area ...but it is not on the main strip. You'd have to take a car over to the main strip. I think we stayed at The Best Western years ago ,right in the beach .Also, I remember Adam's Mark hotel right on the beach also !!! Go to Clearwater tourism.com for ideas of places to stay. There are also many "mom & pop" hotels across the street from the beach and they would be much more reasonable. Most of them have pools, too !!! Happy Planning :sunny:

Having looked into hotels in the area, a good price coming out is for the Red Roof Inn, Clearwater Beach.

Anyone stayed here before?? Any comments??

Cheers

I've not stayed there Claire but if it's the one I am thinking of, it's not beachside - it's across the road. This might not worry you though (and I may have the wrong hotel!) Red Roofs tend to be a little basic but if you are happy with that then all's well :)

We stayed at the Quality Inn with a room overlooking the sea. It was absolutely fabulous there and cost us only $70 per night :thumbsup2

Meg&Minnie, or anyone else who knows? :confused3

Sorry, not a clue - small perhaps, ie suitable for couples? really don't know :confused3

I thought it was a like a non chain hotel ("independent" ) but am quite happy to be corrected :)

Only stayed in St Petes right on the beach at the trade winds resort
really enjoyed it great after a week in the parks

we just spent the time on the beach and the pool

Sorry, I have been away for a few days at the beach (Cape Cod) and just looked at my e-mails. A Mom & Pop are exactly what another poster wrote. They are small ,usually family run motels. Nothing too fancy ,a small pool, across the street from the main street and more than likely neat and clean . Many times the owners or managers might live right on site in an apt. or efficiency. Hope this helps. Don't know the names of any specific hotels like that in Clearwater Beach ,but there were many of them across the street from the beach. Worth looking into if you want to keep your prices down. :sunny: Check out "The Chamber of Commerce" in Clearwater Beach :thumbsup2

Just come back from 4 days at the Hilton CWB, good hotel/right on the beach. The beach is also private to hotel guests and you can get a beer and food delivered direct to you on the beach. 4 days was long enough after 10 days at the Crowne plaza-Superb. Great to relax before the long haul home-Hope this helps

thanks for posting, glad you had such a good time, we are going to stay for three days as we have so much to cram in, as usual! Hilton looks good, been shopping around to get the price down. :thumbsup2

Neil

Last visit we did a week at Orlando and a week on the Gulf side. WE stopped in a house about 10 minutes north of Clearwater.
Visited Clearwater 3 or 4 times and enjoyed it.
Okay...it can be a little tacky in parts......but you'll soon suss them and avoid ( or enjoy ! ) whatever floats your boat.. :)

Worth doing the Little Toot boat trip out of Clearwater...we liked the look of that rather than the Seascreamer personally.

If you go by car...why not drive up to Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Beach...only 20-25 minutes from Clearwater??
Great beaches with no backdrop of apartments and hotels.....LOADS of shells to collect and if you hit lucky you can watch dolphins playing from the beach.
Go to Dunedin...free tour and sample at the Dunedin Brewery!!...breakfast at Kellys ( SUPERB and authentic American diner ) and take a bike ride up the Pinellas Trail.

On Clearwater catch the sunset show every night at Pier 60...free and with some nice stalls selling "art" and curios etc. Well worth doing just to see some of the alternative local folk!

You'll enjoy the break at Clearwater...go for it!
