Clearwater or Ft Myers Beach?? need input!

Okay, I am planning a surprise anniversary get-a-way for my hubby. This will be our first vaca without children, but its only a short one. We would go to Disney...but that would be obviously just for me, haha!

I've booked airfare into St Pete/Clearwater. I found out the international sand sculpting competition is in Ft Myers and would kind of like to see that. And I want to book some kind of deep sea fishing for dh. Trying to figure out if it is "worth" the 2 1/2 hour drive, or if we should just stay in Clearwater. Seems like there is so much more to do there. We could still drive down to the competition on one day... Any input? Thanks a million!

I LOVE Captiva, an easy drive from Ft. Meyers.

I prefer Clearwater Beach to Ft. Meyers Beach but I've never been for a sand sculpture making competition. That sounds kind of cool.

We really like FMB, check out the Pink Shell Beach resort or the Diamond Head Beach Resort. I like Captiva and Sanibel but it's alittle too quiet at night for us.

Well, I'm a big fan of FMB and a fairly frequent visitor there. I've also spent vacations in the past at Clearwater. Normally I'd recommend FMB as I think it's beautiful down there and there's lots to do. But if your getaway will be kind of short, it might be best not to do the extra driving. Clearwater Beach is very nice too.
