I was wondering if anyone has been to the mermaid show at Weeki Wachee? We are thinking of going during our daughter's wish trip, and I was just wondering what other people who have been during a Disney trip or otherwise have thought of it?

Hi,
I live 5 miles south of Clearwater and the Mermaid show isn't anywhere near CLW if you r thinking that. WW is about 2 hours north of Clearwater and about an hour and a half from WDW. I went years ago when it was decent.. It's a state park that use to be a road side attraction in the cold water springs in north central FL. There isn't much at the park but a very, very small water park (with cold spring water as its source) the mermaid show and I think a small boat tour through the springs. It's a long drive for not much but if that's your thing. A few years back when it changed to just the MM show, boat ride and water park, I took my Mom there for the "attraction" I remembered it was so lame, I asked for my money back. I wouldn't waste my time.

If you are planning a day at Clearwater beach, you are much better served by going to the Clearwater Aquarium and seeing Winter the famous dolphin. The Aquarium is small but fun and is 10-15 min from the beach. They are VERY kid friendly there. Just an opinion of a local that has done both and finds the second option better to fill the day with out excessive driving, out of pocket $$ and fun.

My daughter is REALLY into mermaids. She once carried a toy mermaid around in a rubbermaid container filled with water so she could have it with her and the mermaid wouldn't drown. She has about 10 mermaids that she bathes with, and always likes to have one with her at the pool. She is 4 years old. Would she enjoy it? Would it still be a waist of time to go just for the mermaid show? I have never been and I really don't want to waist time or money, but I also don't want her to miss out on something that she might think is worth the extra travel. Is the mermaid show itself really bad?... I am assuming the answer is probably yes...

If you are going to be at MK while in FL, you could always take her to the Pirates League and get her turned into a mermaid!

I probably would take her to have her made into a mermaid. Quite honestly, with the price of gas and driving out this far, it would probably come out to be close to the same. When I drive out to WDW and back (it takes us about an hour & 20 min each way) I use at least a half a tank round trip. Easy $50 bucks just in gas.
I'm sure you can you tube videos for the show and see them on line to make some sort of judgement on if you want to drive almost an hour & half west of Disney for about a 30-45 min show.
It's hard w/ kids because you want them to have the best vacation with the most amazing experiences while on vacation. The show itself that I remember is pretty cheesy but it is a touristy thing. The music and such is piped in and they have tubes underwater that they get air from. They hold their breath an incredible amount of time but they do breath from floating tubes of O2 in the take with them. You sit in a theater like setting with the large tank in front much like a movie screen.

My BFF took us there 2 years ago because my daughter also loves Mermaids. This is no where near Clearwater. It took us close to 2hrs from Orlando. Like State Park doens't have much to see. They have an animal show and tell. You can take pictures with the Mermaid. And then you sit in a room to see the Mermaid show. I thought it was very cute and my girls were very into it. After that we went to the water park (very small) and I honestly think we were done with the park like in 3 hours. I honestly don't think the drive is worth it, not much to see.

i went to WW years ago during a trip to WDW - took something like 2 hours to drive there from disney....

but it was really cool - your daughter will love it - at 4, she will be mesmerized by seeing the mermaids underwater in that theater!

if you're ok with a 2 hour drive (leave early!!!) i say go ahead!

do a search on youtube to see the show

ETA: when i was a child, my grandparents would drive every summer from NJ to Florida, and they always made a stop at Weechi Wachee, that's how much THEY loved it! (only wish they'd have taken me along then, too!)

We drive to Disney, so Weeki Wachee was not far out of the way for us. It was worth the side trip to see it at least once. My kids thought it was pretty neat. There is not a lot to do there, except for watching the mermaid show, and there is a small animal show, and a boat ride on the river (we didn't get to do this though, because the wait was so long when we were there.) Like I said though, it wasn't very far out of our way, I really don't think I could justify a 4 hour trip for it though (It's about 2 hours north of Disney). However if it is something your daughter REALLY wants to do, I say go for it.
Also, just FYI, while Weekie Wachee is 2 hrs north of Disney, Clearwater is about 1 1/2 hrs south-west of Disney. I would not try to do them in the same day.
If you plan on being in Clearwater, I have another suggestion that may be even better than Weeki Wachee. How does your daughter feel about dolphins? Clearwater Marine Aquarium is just a few miles from the beach and is home to Winter the dolphin from the movie "A Dolphin's Tale". I noticed you said this is a "wish" trip for your daughter. Winter is a great little swimming role model for those with disabilities or illnesses to show them that no matter what happens, you just have to keep fighting. If you are not familiar with Winter's story, she was trapped in a crab trap and ended up losing her tail, she was rescued and has since re-learned how to swim, she even has a prosthetic tail she wears sometimes. It's very touching and amazing.
It's not a big place like Sea World, and if you go into it thinking that you may be disappointed. It's a small (rescue center/aquarium), they have about 7-8 dolphins, and many other rescue animals as well, like turtles and otters. Some of the dolphins put on a little show a few times a day, but the star of the place is Winter!! The people that work there are super nice and took the time to really talk to my kids about the animals stories. There is also the option to take a boat ride to their museum across the bay where they have movie memorabilia, a meet and greet with a character version of Winter, and a gift shop. My kids LOVED it!
Again, I don't know if this would be a fit with your family, but I just wanted to throw that option out there, in case you didn't know about this. One other thing if you decide this as an option, it's much better to watch the movie before you go, if you haven't already done so. It makes it more exciting for the kids to see things in person, that they seen in a MOVIE. Or at least it did for my kids. :goodvibes
No matter what you decide though, I hope you all have a great trip,
:grouphug: to your daughter and the rest of your family.
