Anyone have a good method??

Generally I clean mine with bar soap about once a week and that seems to get most of the makeup out of them. But my foundation brush in particular has some built-up color that just won't come out, and it's bugging the heck out of me? I'm wondering if anyone has a good method for occasionally deep cleaning them? Or do I just need to accept that the brush has acquired some permanent staining?

Thanks!

I got some brush cleaner from Sephora once. I didn't think it was any better than the antibacterial hand soap I usually use.

Hot water, suds them up, rinse well and let dry.

(Yes some of mine are stained.)

I clean mine once a week with the same stuff I use to cleanse my face.

I also heard j&j baby soap, but I use Dr. Bronners. Castille soap instead, gentle like baby soap, but it's organic

I use shampoo - the natural bristle brushes will stain, like a shaft of hair they can be porous. J&J Baby shampoo is one of those "stripper" shampoos it is actually pretty harsh and thus the reason it might remove things in your makeup brushes that other soaps won't

Dawn! I've been using it since '05 when an associate in the MAC store in Caesar's Palace recommended it. You can scrub them out by hand with a bit of soap and warm water but I place 1-2 tsps of Dawn into a bowl filled with warm water, swish it so it's a bit bubbly, and drop my brushes in. The liquid goes from a pretty blue to a muddy brown as the formula works my brushes clean (quite disgusting to look at the after product). I rinse then let them air dry.

Dial antibacterial soap in a pump. I do it once a week with warm water. I have used brush cleaner from makeup companies or Sephora and find Dial works just as well (and its $1.00). I squeeze all the water out with a paper towel to see if there is any makeup left within the brush before I lay it on a clean towel to dry.

Basically any shampoo will work. Shampoos are designed to clean oils & product. And if your brushes are natural hair, well shampoo is designed to clean hair without destroying it. And as a PP said, a natural hair brush will have some staining.

I put a little shampoo in the palm of my hand, add a little water to dilute it. Wet the brush, then gently rub in in the palm of my hand. When it's clean, I flick the brush a few times from the wrist, over the sink to get out excess water deep in the bristles and dry them sideways so that any water in the bristles doesn't drip down into the metal ferule and melt the glue holding the bristles in.

x4 for Dawn!!! I get the antibacterial Dawn (the apple scented one). I wash my liquid foundation brush after each use. Other brushes every Sunday.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I think I will try soaking just the bristles in Dawn to see if that gets rid of the existing stains.

I do dry my brushes on their sides, and I'm careful to only get the bristles wet. :)

This exactly what I do.

Now another question, sounds like everyone washes them once a week. Is that necessary? I don't do it that often and never had a problem.

Another vote for Dawn - works like a charm.

I don't always clean my brushes once a week, but I try too. I use a homemade recipe - distilled or boiled water, alcohol, shampoo, conditioner, and Dawn. The conditioner keeps the alcohol from drying out the brushes.

However you clean them, make sure you dry them lying flat.

I do mine about once a year (seriously) I have good MAC brushes, have had them for years, use them daily and actually wash about once a year
